Hawaas :Ramses II statue to be freed from cage

After two years of being hidden behind long iron bars, the Ramses II statue will be once again visible in Bab el-Hadid Square.

The Arab Contractors Company will remove the jungle of bars surrounding the statue, acting on, instructions from the Secretary- General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities, Zahi Hawass.

These bars were used to protect the statue while a scientific team carried out certain investigations on it.

The studies were used to determine the statue's points of weakness and the places in which it was firmly connected to its base rather than just resting on it.

In addition, geophysical studies were carried out on the statue's granite structure in order to test its strength.

Dr Hawass said that the iron cage was no longer needed as the studies had been completed and it is the right of the people to admire.
