Word For The Day, Monday, July 25, 2005 - assuage
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
assuage (uh-SWAYJ), verb
1. To make milder or less severe; to reduce the intensity of; to ease; to relieve.
2. To appease; to satisfy.
3. To soothe or calm; to pacify.
His generosity toward a group of young graffiti writers was, perhaps, one way to assuage his guilt.
--Phoebe Hoban, [1]Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art
If only she would come outside
and let us meet her--face to face;
perhaps our words could turn
her anger's tide, perhaps
we could, if not erase,
at least assuage her rage.
--Euripides, Medea, edited by David R. Slavitt and Palmer Bovie
In one final attempt to assuage fears, the agency claims that these audits will comprise only "1.1 percent of the total audit-related contacts planned for the year."
--Daniel J. Pilla, "IRS prepares to intensify its kinder, gentler audits," [3]Insight on the News, April 29, 2002
Etymology: Assuage comes from Latin ad + suavis, "sweet".
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
get the hell outta here and go find a Cabana Boy, you goober!
I agree.........but it will have to be next month....hubby is on vacation after today, but I'm in no condition for a 2-2.5 hour road trip.......VDOT is not exactly high on my list of favorite departments right now.
But he has another week off around mid-August and we were planning to venture across the bay.
don't worry, i am not languishing here. i am on the wireless connection on the screened porch overlooking this little lagoon. xshub took the kids down to the beach and i will join them at the pool momentarily. i am enjoying the peace and quiet and stitching. one can only chase so many cabana boys, i am on vaca after all.... ; )
LOL!!!!!!!!!!
(ROFL hurts too much)
You are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad!!!!!!!!
hope your sore leg feels better soon, gabz!
And I understand Pinging the day's teacher out of respect - but why does Whyisa need be dragged in to watch my smacking????
more fun with a big audience.
Thank you, my FRiend - I hope so too!!!!!!
Where in SC are you?
Kiawah Island. it's about a half hour from Charleston. SC. very beautiful, studiously undeveloped, the hotel is called the Sanctuary, meaning like a wildlife sanctuary, which didn't register with me prior to getting here. There are signs saying Danger ALLIGATORS all over the property, so xsbrownie and i live in fear of encountering one, while the rest of them taunt us with imaginary sightings. At night it is really pitch black around here, and i don't want to brush up against one, believe me!
I have always wanted to see Charleston.
While I can understand the taunting of the others - I would be right there with you and xsbrownie putting up with it :)
No, you do it.................
Has anyone told you lately that you're sick?
oh ok, thanks for that valuable tip... : ) jerk!
you know i am all for flora and fauna, i just don't want it touching me, necessarily! and it occurs to me that i should have gone down to the beach with them just incase there is a shark attack and one of them gets nibbled on. i am a championship worrier, here i worry about shark attacks. when we get to denver, next weekend, my fear will be that i will be caught between two converging forest fires. i can dream up spectacular things to worry about : )
Tag of "loser" Jean tries to assuage,
By a trip to the land of fromage,
To be seen in La France
next to Tour-winner Lance,
And then wooing the decolletage...
The woman has a worry; I try to advise her to give her the peace-of-mind that comes with being able to protect herself. And for that I'm sick? Hell, she's be seeking the things out if she remembers their skin can be made into cool shoes...
That is DEFINITELY what I call champion worrywart...........even I'm not that bad. LOL!!!
I prefer a handbag or belt :)
Re your ex, maybe you should put out a contract on her.
