Word For The Day, Monday, July 25, 2005 - assuage

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

assuage (uh-SWAYJ), verb
1. To make milder or less severe; to reduce the intensity of; to ease; to relieve.
2. To appease; to satisfy.
3. To soothe or calm; to pacify.

His generosity toward a group of young graffiti writers was, perhaps, one way to assuage his guilt.
--Phoebe Hoban, [1]Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art

If only she would come outside
and let us meet her--face to face;
perhaps our words could turn
her anger's tide, perhaps
we could, if not erase,
at least assuage her rage.
--Euripides, Medea, edited by David R. Slavitt and Palmer Bovie

In one final attempt to assuage fears, the agency claims that these audits will comprise only "1.1 percent of the total audit-related contacts planned for the year."
--Daniel J. Pilla, "IRS prepares to intensify its kinder, gentler audits," [3]Insight on the News, April 29, 2002

Etymology: Assuage comes from Latin ad + suavis, "sweet".

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

There once was a hooker named Page
Whose income was real hard to gauge
Though the IRS pried
She kept secrets inside
Won't reveal what's her yearly ass-wage

In an effort to assuage traffic problems on both the causeway and Main Street, the Coast Guard only allows the drawbridge over the Chincoteague Channel to open once per hour during the summer months. Of course this does little to assist in assuaging the fishing vessel traffic in the Channel :)

But no measures can do any justice to assuaging the traffic woes to, from and on the Island this week.

Famous ponies and saltwater cowboys
Chincoteague has changed, but ponies remain irresistible draw

The year round population of about 4,500 and summer population of about 10,000 will swell to over 40,000 by tomorrow night/Wednesday morning.

Daddy will be taking Jax to the carnival at some point this week, but that does nothing to assuage my guilt about being unable to slog through the marsh to get front row viewing positions of the ponies coming across the channel.

A little (OK, a LOT) of beer can make the pain go away...

perhaps you can deputize the 7yo into helping you amuse the 3yo.

the weather is a changing. whenever a low pressure zone moves into a high pressure area, or vice versa, things feel worse... weather's gonna be nice ehwn it settles tho.

I'm not having any 3 yo's - I'll have my 7yo, her 7yo and her 6yo.

The weather is lovely here this morning - I have not had to turn the a/c on.....open windows and fans is perfect.

I saw Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France again. Then the French immediately protested his win. It seems that even after losing 1 teste to cancer, he still had 1 more than the entire French Team combined.

You know, I gotta hand it to a guy with so positive an outlook that when he steps out of the shower in the morning and looks in the mirror, he can still say to himself, 'The sack is half-full!'
