OK, all you Freeper baseball afficionados. It's early Sunday evening..it was a hell of a week for the national pastime, and I wanted to get our weekly thread up and running...I won't have a chance late tonight, early tomorrow, and there is much to talk about..
I always thought Manny was the greatest run producer since Lou Gehrig, and then I heard a stat the other day that more or less confirmed it. Based on RBIs per game played for 20th century players, he ranked behind only Gehrig, Greenberg, Foxx and Ruth. Pretty good company. I'm not sure exactly what distant planet he gets his instructions from, but it seems to be working.
They're melting...and it ain't even August yet.
Damned rough week for a Twins fan. They show flashes, then have games like today again where they can't buy a hit.
look for sox to deal big this week!!!
Have you read his, "Tales From The Dugout"? It's supposed to be very funny and light.
My Sawks had a great weekend. Splitting a four game set with the best club in baseball IN THEIR HOUSE!
They are now off to get fat on the Royals.
I agree with you on both points.
When I was a kid, I had a Warren Spahn plastic figurine. Must be worth a fortune now.
Wow, you had those too? I used to think those were the most elegant artwork imaginable. I had a bunch of them -- Eddie Mathews, in a fielding position; Ted Williams, swinging the bat (my bat broke off); Willie Mays, making a basket catch; Mickey Mantle, bat in hand. I loved Spahnnie's high leg-kick. There was a guy who won 363 games, and did not win his first game until he was 25 years old, and had his first full season at 26. Thanks for reminding me of those figurines -- I can still see them lined up on the top of my bureau (interspersed with various reptiles and amphibians in assorted tanks.)
Cards started 4 regulars (not to include pitcher) tonite.
And one after that, with one away in the bottom of the 9th with the Cubs up by one.
Money down the drain.
Stan the Man is one of the least appreciated truly great hitters who ever lived. Maybe not in St. Louis, but among fans in general. He has to be among the 10 greatest to ever pick up a bat. Not to mention a wonderful, good-natured guy
I have met him about 5 different times, and he is a great guy. We use to rent a box, and he would come in and chat and play his harmonica for us.
Can Eckstein squeeze a man home from second?
Not a squeeze, but he got him home!
A walk, a stolen base, a base hit and it's tied up with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th.
Cards - Cubs 4-4 ... another base hit, now Prince Albert at the plate with the game on the line. It don't get any better than this.
They're pitching to him!
3-2, 2 outs!
Extra frames.
Both games Matty Mo was the pitcher and they lost both --ugh.
I won 2 tickets for sect. 170 row 9 on Friday from a local sports call-in. A couple decided the heat would be too much so they donated them to be given away.
It was bloody hot, 110-115º easy, with the sun shining except for 3-4 times when a few clouds covered for a few minutes. There was a nice breeze often though so that made it more bearable. Very hazy too with the ozone alert at orange.
Took lots of water (no way was going to buy 10-15 bottles of water at $4 each), some ice packs that I would rub my arms, legs face and even put on my head under my hat. lol
Got slight sunburn on my legs and arms but not too bad considering. I saw one woman they had laying down with her legs elevated at the bottom of the stairs and trying to cool her down. My sister said she saw a lot more every time she went to smoke. It was brutal.
