In a way, I feel bad for the Nats. They surprised everyone by making it this far. I think their collapse will be attributable to two causes. Lack of offensive depth, and the lack of good middle and set-up relief. They can't expect to deliver a 1 or 2 run lead to Chad Cordero every night.

Heard a rumor on ESPN about Bob Wickman maybe going to the Red Sox. It will be interesting to see how the Tribe does this week on the west coast road trip to Oakland and Seattle. Not sure yet whether the Indians will be buyers or sellers...may depend on their performance this week prior to the trading deadline. Supposedly the Yanks had scouts at the Indians - KC series earlier this week, looking for a CF.

Thome is a good guy, it's a shame to see him come to such a sour end.

I don't think Thome is through yet, but at 35 it will be tough to regain his previous form. The Indians management has been patting themselves on the back for not going the extra mile and signing Thome to a long-term deal when he was a FA a couple of years back. The team doctors were skeptical Thome's back would hold up through a long-term deal. Still wish we had Manny though. The guy is just an RBI machine.

How can you collapse if you were playing way over your head for more than half a season.. Their record in one-run games was unreal..

They win five on this upcoming nine-game road trip and I'm going to become a believer. For now, I'm just another pissed-off Phils phan.

Kevin Millwood pitched a good game for the Tribe today. 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings. Lots of speculation that Millwood is on the block, since he was signed to a one year make good contract before the season. He has a losing record, 4-7, I think, but has had very little run support and has pitched much better than the record indicates.

Another aspect of The Nats that points to an 'Oh well' end. Their home record is about 20% better than their road record. It gets worse, they've already played a good 60% of their home schedule. They'll really have to improve on the road, just to win about 85 games and have an outside shot at a WC.

The Man was my idol...

Pookie, you must be close to my age. I just passed the half century mark.

I saw Stan the man hit a homer over the "right field porch" at the old Sportsmans Park in 1963. (showing my age, i was maybe 8 at the time).

God love Stan the Man. Still the biggest name in St.Louis.

Mo is my choice for AL Cy Young. Garland will have 20 wins and a good ERA. That's the ideal resume. Buehrle could get to 20. Hard to say. I wonder if they will take votes away from each other like Ortiz and Manny.

Anyway, Mo deserves it. A 0.89 ERA for a closer-- it blows out the water anything he's ever done in a season. It's ridiculously good. He's been the team MVP and has kept the Yankees in the WC and division hunt.

I think the rumor was for Glavine. No way we do that trade for Glavine.

Correction. Mo is now at 0.85 for an ERA, with 25 saves in 27 chances.

Why can't sports have a topic of their own
instead of being lumped in where they have
absolutely no reason to be.

Culture/Society culture Discussion of health, education, welfare, drugs, abortion, environment, housing, unions, employment, social security, religion, arts, humanity, sports, and other cultural and societal issues.

Stan the Man is one of the least appreciated truly great hitters who ever lived. Maybe not in St. Louis, but among fans in general. He has to be among the 10 greatest to ever pick up a bat. Not to mention a wonderful, good-natured guy. To me, his equivalent unappreciated elite pitcher is Warren Spahn. Spahnie was unbelievable. An unmatched pitching machine.
