Word For The Day, Thursday, July 21, 2005 - propinquity

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

propinquity \pruh-PING-kwih-tee\, noun
1. Nearness in place; proximity.
2. Nearness in time.
3. Nearness of relation; kinship.

--Mark Bechtel, "Getting Hot," [1]Sports Illustrated, December 2000

Technologically it is the top service among the women's fighting forces, and it also has the appeal of propinquity to gallant young airmen.
--"After Boadicea -- Women at War," [2]Time Europe, October 9, 1939

I was stunned by the propinquity of the events: I had never been in the same room with anyone who was later murdered.
--Karla Jay, [3]Tales of the Lavender Menace

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

In light of the recent discussions of the SCOTUS, who can resist the propinquity of religion and politics and how it played out for Senator McCarthy?

I think Ann Coulter's doubts about John Roberts are unfounded. His propinquity to a woman who is staunchly prolife makes it a more than even bet that his outlook on Roe would match that of Ann. No one can guarantee John Robert's fealty to the prolife cause, but to throw him overboard as Ann would for a more reliable Edith Jones is pointless, since it is extremely unlikely that Edith Jones could get confirmed. This guy can.

xshub said it didn't even sound like she wrote it. let's hope that unlike peggy noonan, who long continued to defend her silly criticism of the Bush inaugural speech, Ann may eventually recant that column.

Dummy explosions on 3 subways. The propinquity of these explosions to their recent attacks makes me think they are linked.

pinquity" ?

when he's done he'll feel "pincushiony"!

But I do feel Ann Coulter's trepidation - we've been hornswaggled before - especially with Souter. my pinquity with her position is scaring even me.
