Don't you have to push the quills through to get them out...because of the barbed ends..

oh man, yes ~ they are barbed like a fish hook ...

only not just at the very tip ~ the barbs run all the way the shaft of the quill

actually to pull quills out you need to cut the end off. Quills are full of air and cutting them causes them to deflate, flatten and relax the barbs.
