If it's a troll ye' be,...the Viking Kitties'll have ye either way.

To respond, Jars of Clay are probably among the most popular.

I prefer a band called Lifehouse, which is actually pretty subtle in message but very positive. Sound is very edgy like Nirhvana or the Foos. More headbangin' than toe tappin'. A great band nonetheless.

Country folk like Alison Krauss always include at least one good Chritian tune per album. "There must be a reason" is among my favorites.

Her band also features Ron Block and Dan Tyminski, who's own releases feature more direct Christian messages.

Just replace "oh baby" with "shine Jesus shine" and you'll be a star. LOL!

If that's a recent pic, those boys'll need good haircuts if they want to be considered "former sinners".

Actually, if you post a more recent pic that may be even scarier!

Before this gets out of hand, I have to state that I was being facetious, if not sarcastic.

To tell the truth, what put the nail in the coffin of my membership in organized religion was the attempt to incorporate contemporary music into church services.

I was a Catholic School kid in the '60's who liked the weird Latin Mass and the creepy organ music! When the guitars and tamboreens came out with the English Mass, it kinda took the mystery out of it, and rendered it corny, at least to me.

I believe; I just don't care to belong.

For all I know, they may have been too fruity to make it on the tour circuit, and feigned religious conversion to keep from flipping burgers or dressing hair.

Lots of country singers incluse gospel tracks on their albums, or even do complete gospel albums. Johnny Cash put out several really good gospel records, and he was very devout up until he died, even though his music tended to be, umm, dark. Charlie Daniels has released a couple gospel albums as well. Alison Kraus has done lots of gospel, and a more angelic voice you won't find anywhere.

If nothing else, hit a record store. There are just tons of country gospel compilations out there, often very cheap.

Aw, heck,..let's give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Them Stryper boys done cleaned up okay.

Though I'm guessing they might've gone through a couple truckloads of heroin before they "saw the light.".

**To tell the truth, what put the nail in the coffin of my membership in organized religion was the attempt to incorporate contemporary music into church services.**

What put the 'nail in the coffin' of the organized religion I was a member of was the false doctrine.

I like a variety of gospel music, but if the beat and the instrumental drown out the words, no thanks. If the song is instrumental only, fine, but if there are words being being sung, I want to hear them clearly.

Some folks with impaired hearing can't discern the words with amplified instruments. That is a problem my father has.

For me, music is not a major factor in my walk with God.
My greatest thrill is being a part of spiritual warefare; helping souls escape the snares of the devil.

I'm looking forward to coming back the ten thousands of His saints, clothed in white, and riding white horses. Man, I get goosebumps thinking about that glorious event.

What kind of music will there be in heaven? By the grace of God, I intend to find out.

Who is most popular has a lot to do with when you ask. Twenty years ago it was Amy Grant and Sandi Patti. Now it is MercyMe, Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day, Newsboys, Michael W. Smith, Natalie Grant, and Crystal Lewis, to name just a few.

Many country artists are Christian. Those who are overt about it include Charlie Daniels, Buddy Jewell, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Paul Overstreet, Josh Turner, and Nickel Creek.

But there is a growing separate genre called Christian Country -- http://www.ccma.cc/index.php -- with which I have little familiarity.

I know your pic was in sarcasm...but I actually think those guys were:

A. Genuine

and

B. Rocked harder than many "secular" bands did. Ever listen to the song "Soldiers Under Command?" Solid work.

I'm not a huge country music fan, but I really like her music.
Her voice is amazing. :D

And the link I posted was for circa 2003,...somewhat less flambouyant, I would say.

But, hey,...does anybody on this thread NOT have pics of themselves from the 80's that they would prefer never see the light of day?

Hence your note - "best female singer, period" - definitely no reason to marginalize with the "country" label, which I think is a bit ambiguous and hard to pin down in todays day and age.

Union Station is also a really amazing group!

Union Station is also a really amazing group!

I was flippin though the stations a couple months ago and on CMT they had a Krauss & Union Station thing on. They were playing live and taking requests or something. The sign in the background said "AKUS" I guess "Alison Krauss" "Union Station" :D But anyhow, they were great! :D
