I'd agree... You can't replace a tree that is old enough to provide shade.
I replaced the pecan with an oak. We pulled the broken one out by the roots. I still have about a 2 foot pecan that is growing back. It almost looks like it's growing from the oak. I know I need to pull it but I hate to. I'm such a tree hugger:')
