This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well see he turned out well didn't he :)
That he did! : ) They all did! Well I really am going to go now! G'night all!
I keep meaning to ask.... do you still have the minis?
Good morning everyone...
Say - we're long past due for another thread aren't we.... perhaps I'll get around to that today.
Good morning.
Waiting on the farrier.
When you start the new thread take out the part about my ping list. I probably won't be doing that so regular anymore. It didn't really generate any newbies anyway, all of us are able to keep up without it.
Becky
Well, I like a good morning ping because if I've been out arguing in the forum, it's three pages down in my comments and you may be talking and I don't even know it.... but if you don't want to do it, alrighty then. Somebody ping me if there's good conversation going and I haven't been around. :~D
So what's up with the farrier.... are you going to have any talk with him about your wondering last week?
"Are you still at work?"
No. I got home on Sunday at noon. Yea, the storms are worrisome, but I try not to be too worried, because worry gets me nowhere but a stomach ache LOL
Yeah, we are going to have a conversation before we start shoeing. I'm still not for sure if what I have learned is applicable. He wasn't doing most of the things before the last shoe job that he is doing now, other then overreaching a little. So I'm not sure how much corrective stuff I want him to do. I'm also afraid my saying that I think the horse is not level (which is what I think altho I can't really see it), is going to put him on the defensive. But I think the proof is in the pudding....he was fine till the shoeing, and looking back I remember and even commented on how fast he got done last time, like 20 minutes. There wasn't much shaping of shoes to be done in that amount of time. Especially since he is going up on his prices this time, he needs to take a little more time.
I do have a few names of other farriers I've been gathering just in case.
Becky
Well, it was obviously an off day for the shoer last time... That was just a really bad turn of events!
Hopefully... he's on his game today. How long till the ride? First part of Nov right?
"Say - we're long past due for another thread aren't we.... perhaps I'll get around to that today."
Bush's fault.
Since more people seem to be on right now than the last time I asked, I am going to ask again: My instructor has a mare that came down with laminitis. Apparently her hoof wall stopped growing several months to a year ago and then later she came down with the laminitis. What can make a hoof wall stop growing? Could that cause the laminitis?
I should whack you with a fish. ;~D
Sorry, I couldn't help it.
The ride is the first weekend of Nov. I just got done counting up how long till then and it's 4 weeks from this weekend. If he really gets a good shoeing this time, he should still be fine by then. If not, I'll have time to get another shoer out here to redo him.
Becky
I have no clue about that, sorry.
Becky
If you like, I can ping in the mornings. I am at work 7:00 AM EST. The weekends would be later, and if I was not home, maybe you could do it. I would let you know if I was camping or something. :')
You stumped me.... last time you posted it too.... not sure what's going on with that mare. But recovering from laminitis requires good new growth, so it's bad if she's not producing that.
Hoof wall non-growth wouldn't cause laminitis but laminitis can cause hoof wall problems, like seedy toe.
It sounds like your instructors horse just has crappy feet, like Tuffy. Always gonna be one problem after another. If she doesn't already have the horse on a biotin supplement, she should try it.
It was really strange to me too. I have never heard of no hoof growth before. I was trying to think of what might cause a person's fingernails to stop growing, and all I could think of is severe malnutrition, but this mare is fed well, so it can't be that. In fact she is too fat.
Mornin'!
Finally got caught up here.
The weatherdude says that we are going to have rain every day through the weekend.
And I was ~so~ hoping to go riding at that new place this Saturday. :-(
