The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Tieing horses up is a good practice.

Sorry for your troubles at the arena. So what are you going to do, just ride at home?

Becky

It is probably a half lease. Half leases are the most common, and the amount of the lease is split among however many people are leasing the same horse. Details as to riding times and other bills are usually worked out among the leasers.

I ususally schedule my non-lesson time like I would my lesson time. Usually I have a pick of horses, there are three that I ride, but sometimes my trainer will tell me, "You're going to ride (horse's name) today"

Noon is bad enough.... but trust me, he'll be late :~D

And it takes him forever to saddle his horse, like he's evaluating each piece of tack for the first time... We won't get out before 1-1:30....

I love Bob... but punctual or expedient, he's not. Good thing it's light till 9 ;~\

How much does it cost to feed and care for a horse usually?

Outside of the boarding, I mean.

Depending on local hay costs... and I have no idea for your area, I'd round off around $100+/-50% per month for their feed, depending on time of year. Shoeing every-other month around $60 for standard shoes.... wormers and incidental stuff, another $50.

I may look around for another arena with more dependable people but other than that, just ride at home.

Hey, do ya'll remember the pic I posted of the new indoor being built? I thought it looked too close to the property line of the neighbor next to me and we've since found out, it's waaaaay too close and the neighbor has a high-powered Dallas attorney fighting it. It's nearly finished (with a house attached) and they are fighting to get it torn down. I'll take some pics today and post them, the place looks like it's inches away from the neighbors barn. The city zoning guy was fired for approving the building of this place and it also appears that the owner misled the city about where they were going to build it. Can't wait to see how this is going to turn out...

Gads... What a nightmare for both sides to think of it being nearly done and fighting now. You'd think they'd have talked when the first post was going in the ground.

I figured that it would be around $200.00 a month when you average out for a year.

And if the horse goes barefoot? The farrier needs to come more often to work on the feet, right?

Or is it always better to show a horse?

*full of questions today - sorry!*

You know, the people building the place had several acres to choose from, where to build that monstrosity. The fact that they put it right on top of the neighbor is just unneighborly and rude. If we wanted to live right on top of each other, we'd have bought homes in a housing development.

I agree.

Completely.

And it's a wonder as to ~why~ they would want to build that on the property line anyway.

They must not like having their space or sumthin'.

$200 is high... for just feed, but there's always ~something~, either vet or shots or some new piece of tack.

Cyn is only trimmed every 8 weeks... And he sometimes needs to trim very little off, as much as we've been riding trail, she's wearing down and staying even. IMHO, she's the exception. Though it's trendy to go barefoot, but I think most horses need to be shod to stay sound unless you are only riding in nice soft arenas. Tiffney is trying hers barefoot, and they wouldn't walk on the gravel roads, they were trying to pussyfoot around the edges. Their feet hurt.

They want their space.... they just don't want the arena to take it up so they plant it in the neighbor's space.

Thanks for your patience, Hair. I'd just rather get advice from people who actually have horses than look it up online and who knows if that info is right or wrong.

$2400.00 a year should cover everything then, barring some very serious illness / injury.

I've always wondered about horses that aren't shod. I thought ALL domesticated horses were shod. The first time I heard about a barefoot horse was when you bought Cyn.

I'm learning more every day!

I don't know what will happen with this barefoot trend. I know people who are doing it... and I think with the right hoof, kept barefoot since birth, then perhaps. I know it's much harder to 'go barefoot' once they've been shod. It takes a long time of soft ouchy feet, if ever, for them to adjust. I know if we ever do shoe Cyn, and we consider it and ask if we should at every trim, we'll probably not be able to ever go back.

Many of them think many of the lamenesses we have, including the heel pain we manage with Bay, are caused or made worse by shoeing. Maybe... he also carried heavy riders long distances his whole life. All athletes wear out somewhere. True.... Mustangs don't get Navicular. Mustangs also don't live to be twenty, they go lame and get eaten at half that age ;~D
