The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"Bounce" is suppose to work good for repelling flies, bees, and such. Someone sent me an email about the many uses. It's on my home computer, and I am at work. I know a lot of people who would tie a strip around their bridles to repell deer flies.

Tuffy, I hope you get your badly needed rain. It has been one of the most beautiful summers here, in a long time. No frost yet, and temps in the low 80's and sunny. The past two were nasty, with a lot of rain and cooler temps. It sure has been enjoyable for a change.

Duchess, after reading that article about EEE, I am worried about my daughter. She came home yesterday from work, freezing. She had not felt good since Labor Day. She did go to the doctor last week and had blood work and they said it was a viral infection. They gave her meds, but she still doesn't feel good. I wanted to take her to emergency room, but she just went to bed. Her husband is in Columbus helping set up the store, for Quarter Horse Congress. She said she felt better this morning, but it is a worry.

Maureen is in Houston visiting her son's family. I hope she gets out of there before "Rita" hits. I can't remember when her flight back is.

Hoping for the best to you guys who are in the path.

I recalled something this morning that I was going to tell you all about that happened at the ride. There was a horse there that took an instant dislike to the vet judge. Seemed like for no reason. I talked to the lady that owned the horse and she said this judge has judged other rides she has been to and this horse has always been this way towards him. I've never seen anything like this. This judge couldn't hardly get close to this horse without it running backwards from him. From what I've been told he's the only one this horse has reacted to this way. Curious situation. I never was around when he had to check out the horse so I don't know what they did. All during the checkout of other horses the lady kept the horse up there by the judge, I guess trying to get her use to him. I was especially impressed to see how the judge worked with the horse. When there was a break between horses she would take the horse by him and he would stand quietly as close as he could get. The horse would every now and then reach out and sniff at him, then back up a step. He never crowded the horse. If the horse sniffed him and stood quietly after he would move a tiny bit closer, put out a hand for the horse to sniff. I did see one time that he did manage to get right by her shoulder, and scratch her under her chin, but you could tell the horse was very alert.....

Anyway, I thought it interesting, and wondered what the deal was...no one would probably ever know.

Becky

Huh - interesting.... Either the horse is more temperamental than she's letting on, or that guy reminds him of something awful.

Well, I did see other people go up to her and she was fine with it. The horsmenship judge had no problem touching her. I never paid that close of attention to see of any other men could approach her. She was a mustang, and the lady said she was a tough one to break.

Thanks for the thoughts. It seems like it is just taking too long to clear up.My ex-SIL has her QH mare over our place. My daughter is suppose to be working her and taking to the sale on Saturday. She can't do that, with not feeling well. I wanted to get some pictures of this mare and post. I will get some this evening, if my daughter feels good enough to get out to the barn.

Houston won't take a big hit. It's gonna rain and have strong winds but going by the current forecast maps, Houston and Galveston will be fine. Brownsville should also be ok, just lots of rain and wind. It's in between those places that will take the full brunt of the storm then it heads straight up towards me. But like I say, I'm way too far inland for it to still be a hurricane.

An odd sickness like that is always troubling. How long has she been sick?

Ah - well it could be something to do with men, then. I've seen that happen.

One good thing about it, none of the towns on the Texas coast are a "bowl" like New Orleans. Galveston is a barrier island so if it's going to take a hit, people do need to evacuate.

Hope your daughter gets well soon.

There were several people at the ride that had Bounce strips hanging from bridles. I never asked how well they worked.

That judge is probably the anti christ.

Seriously, when an animal reacts to someone like that, it always puts me on my guard. They can be a much better judge of character than I am.

I've heard of that happening but always was skeptical that it really happened. Just like I've heard some women say that they have had trouble with horses if it's that time of the month for them too.... I was sketptical about that too.

If this phenomenom is true then it would probably have to do with scent. Maybe this guy smelled like something that had scared this horse in the past.

How long has she been sick?

Since Labor Day weekend. She was getting a little better, then yesterday she was sick again. The doctor wanted her to take a few days off work, but she didn't. She just can't get warm. Strange. Maybe, it will just take some time.

That's good those cities will not be hit too hard. Ohio looks better and better all the time. ;')

We don't know yet. I agree with Tuffy about Houston not taking a direct hit but I.m not so sure about Brownsville. Initially that's where it was headed and I have seen them go back to the original tracking so often. She's still going straight west. There is a high ridge that is keeping her from turning north. It's supposed to weaken Friday. Will she curve up? Probably, but no one knows for sure. We all have to all be ready.

That was the only horse this guy had trouble with. I liked him. He was funny and relaxed, seemed to make an effort to get the riders to relax. He seemed very gentle with the horses too. When Harley's sore back showed up, the vet said to him with a nice pat, OK your sore I won't touch it anymore. I've seen vets run their hands over sore backs over and over to get a feel for how sore the horse is...

He was a big guy, and had a bright purple hat on:).
