The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It really has been the weekend from hell. My kids were fighting with each other nonstop, they would all come crying to me, I grounded them from the tv because they were fighting over it and of course, I'm the bad guy over that. I'm going to let that stand, though. They got busy and happier with no tv. It was 100 degrees all weekend and supposed to stay that way all week. My saddle pads being used as a litter box and now Tuffy so lame. I feel like I deserve a visit from a cute vet.

There actually is a long list of things she did that really bothered me:)

She was suppose to keep some of the horses "exercised". IMO, that meant she was suppose to ride them. She exercised them by having me lunge them for 30 minutes several times a week.

She turned horses out to pasture that the boarder wanted/paid for them to be stalled. It cut back on her having to muck so much. These boarders were so routine in when they came that she could get by with it. On the days she knew they were coming in the stalls they went.

Then there was this one boarder, a kid. Debbie had talked her parents into buying this really nice gelding. Debbie actually wanted the horse herself but couldn't afford him. This horse was way too much horse for this kid. The first few years he was there Debbie rode/showed him. Then the parents started thinking that the kid need to be riding him. The kid was scared of him, he was very hot. And in my opinion Debbie didn't help the situation at all. She didn't want his coat faded so she kept him stalled. He, of course would get very restless and paced, and pawed which tore up the expensive rubber mats in the the stalls.. So it got to where she TIED him in the stall ALL day. Then right before the kid would get there to ride she untied him and or took him out and lunged the crap out of him to calm him down. Of course that really didn't work. I've known very few horses, especially Arabs, that you can actually get them tired lunging them. Mostly just seemed to hype him up more. This was the one that worried me the most. I was really afraid this kid was going to get hurt, but didn't feel I could tell while I worked for Debbie. This kids mother was a friend of Celia's. Celia helped me out, I told her what was going on and she told the kids mother.

This is where it got aggravating. The parents didn't do anything....they didn't think there was anything they could do....they said they just didn't have the time to go out there and check up...and didn't want to find another stable or trainer. It was nuts and made me realize I just needed to butt out:) I felt bad for the kid, and she did get tossed pretty bad once, but there just wasn't anything to be done about it. I felt sorry for the horse too....He needed to be turned out to be a horse sooooo bad. He probably would have done alot better in the show ring too...he was always just like a wind up toy wound up way to tight:) His name was Taminator:)

I've been the heavy all weekend too. My granddaughter took a marker to my piano keys. I spanked her butt and proceeded to make her clean it. My DIL told me "how do you know she did it" (the kid has a long hx and the boys only here for an hour and were supervised the entire time . Give me a break) Anyway, Sarah then started blaming her cousin. She is usually like my tail but I would send her on her way each time she lied. It was hard to get her to understand what lieing was but I told her what if I told you I would take you to Walmart and then left while you were getting your shoes. She finally caught on and when I told her her cousin was going to get a spanking she fessed up.

Oh and I didn't mention that poor horse was not only tied in the stall he was hobbled to keep him from pawing:(

Chris shoed for Debbie for awhile after I left. He told me alot of the boarders a few years back left because she was charging them for every little thing she supposedly did with their horses. Like adding $10 bucks to the price of shoeing for her holding the horses for the farrier. Funny thing tho, they were crossed tied in the barn, and half the time she wasn't even there when he shoed...

Things like that I just didn't feel right about. I was the one that moved the horses that were suppose to be stalled. If a boarder told Debbie they were going on vacation and she knew they wouldn't be coming out in the pasture the horse would go and in the summer when there was lots of grass they didn't even get fed the grain the owner paid for them to get.

Sharn, doncha be pinging my hubby. That picture was perfect, he usually is asleep at his desk.

I forgot one other thing that happened, speaking of lying. My husband, being the great guy that he is, got me out of the house yesterday afternoon for a shopping trip. We are walking around Home Depot and his cell phone rings, it's our alarm system monitoring service, saying the alarm went off, someone answered the phone when they called and didn't know what to do and did we want them to call the cops. About that time my cell phone rings and it's the kids, saying the alarm went off but my son was standing right beside it when it went off and he punched the code in to turn it off but the monitoring company had called. I got my son on the phone and asked if he set off the alarm. No, he said, he didn't touch it. Well, ok, maybe he did touch one key. We told the monitoring service false alarm and told our son to keep his mitts off the alarm keypad.

Huh.... Well, I'm with ya on that stuff. Especially the way she managed horse that belonged to the other kid... Not looking out for the best interests of that kid, to be sure.

I'd think people who aren't gonna be around would want the horses turned out (unless they are getting pasture scuffle scars) and I know cleaning stalls is one of the considerations we think about when deciding whether to put them in.

I think when I run mine, they'll all have stalls with runs, and access to pasture, and the board will be the same for everyone.... it it's nice and they don't have to come in, great, but I can see how I wouldn't want to have all these variable board bills based on whether they stayed out 10 or 15 nights that month. Those judgment calls about what's best for the horse are part of what they're paying me for. No one will stay out in the rain, but no one will be stalled when they don't need to be either.

A marker to the piano keys is a whole lot worse than cat piss on saddle pads. I'd be sick about that. it wasn't permanent ink, was it?

No , they were washable. That's beside the point though. It's still being distructive. I'm not much of a material possession worrier but I do expect , respect of other peoples property. That start as babies IMO.

I agree, being respectful of other people's property is one of the most important things kids need to learn, in order to get along in this world.

Yeah, that's pretty much what i thought. She did treat the horses good, there was never abuse. But she'd do anything to save a dime. But you know, IMO, the boarders were just as much to blame. It would have been so easy for them to prevent this sort of thing, just show up unexpectedly once in while. Don't follow such a routine. There were boarders who weren't on set scheduled visits and this sort of thing didn't go on with there horses.

It was also funny, if Debbie LIKED a horse really alot, like the really expensive high bred show horse winners, she didn't do this sort of thing. They were treated with kid gloves...LOl.

I just couldn't work for her. She tried a few times to get in my pocket:). When I first started working for her she showed me what she wanted done, she usually wasn't there when I worked. At first it was just going to be a few hours. Rather then pay me by the hour we set a set salary. It was funny how the longer I worked the more work there would be on the board to do, but the salary didn't go up:). I did it for a while then just started cutting back on the time I'd lunge each horse.

I've wondered tho, if stables almost have to do this sort of thing to make it. She doesn't make enough to pay full time help, but to make enough money to keep it going she can't do the work properly herself. Something has to give...

Well one lady wanted her horse stalled during the day and turned out in the run by itself at night. This was a horse that Debbie thought was just a dink. And this lady had a set routine. So on the days Debbie knew she wasn't coming out in the pasture with other horses it went. One day when the lady came she was commenting on how this horse could have some marks on him since he was by himself. She asked me to look at him. I wan't going to lie. I told her the horse had been out in the pasture, because I put him there the day before. She just kind of looked at me stupidly like but that's not suppose to be.

I watched to see what would happen and nothing did. I think alot of them were just so overwhelmed with how nice the faciluties were and there wasn't too many other places like that to go that they just dealt with it....

It was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Watching people willing laying down to be raped:)

We haven't had many instances of lying but when it happens the kids know they are in major trouble. They know they will get a smack and tv etc on hold. Tommy lied about jacob hitting him the other day......he got his punishment and was made to sit on his bed for 1/2 an hr, no tv etc. I don't think it will happen again any time soon! Lad was so shocked! But at 3 he knows the difference between right and wrong and he knows that lying is a sin. So punishment it is.
I don't hink I'm being mean, Its because I love them that they have boundaries. They learn to respect them and are better children for it. : )
