The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Lots of gusting winds here too. Wind gusts up to 36 mph now and I hope the trees make it through.

It really gets dark early when a tropical storm is approaching. : )

Lots of leaves blown off trees and a small branch down every now and then is all I have seen so far.

So far, so good.....

I have always wondered how you train a horse to be parade safe, other then to just go to them....it's just such a unique situation, that would be hard to reproduce for practice.
It's called nusiance training. Basically you expose them to a lot of boogers, like umbrellas, and wavy things like flags, and banners, small screaming children, and any other scary thing that you can think of. They do it for police horses, and they have whole trials where they expose the horse to every possible horse-heart-attack giving thing possible. The horse is then judged on how calmly he takes the whole thing. It's one obstacle after another, that would give any normal horse early grey hairs.

All better. Sheath went down after about 3 days. He's moving around normally as well.

I got 4 or 5 big tree limbs down in the front yard, but other than that, we and all the critters are just fine. It got really windy last night and rained 3 or 4 inches. My Dish had no signal for most of the night, but the power never went off. We've actually gotten more damage here lately from these big pop-up thunder storms we've been having. But hey, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth!

I just got a voice mail from Cav and he's fine too. Said his internet cable was out and he'd check back in later. So we're all present and accounted for.
