The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

All the horses were acting strange, very on edge. Most of the horses at these shows are pretty experienced and laid back. Saturday they were all acting like first timers.

Prez is 10yrs old and has been hauled to shows since he was a weanling - it's very old hat to him, and totally out of character for him to rear up. A quarter horse stud who has been to every show this year and acted like a pro was uncontrollable. Most of the horses were just very nervous and excitable.

How old is JP? Can he reach the pedals? It looks like he is having a blast, sorry he is unwell though, I hate it when kids are ill....: (
I'm almost tempted to get Tommy with the bucket!
I'm sure Deaconjim will say no though! Do you mind me asking the price? It would make a great Christmas present!

Trail ride pictures! Today was a terrific ride. The horses felt pretty good and we were mostly in the shade by the time it got hot.

Here's the floor of one of the small wooden culvert bridges... these can be slippery when wet, or if the horse wants to dance around on them, but not today.

We rode through areas that were dry today that were really muddy last time, it's dried out a lot, but a couple patches of suck mud remain. They'll probably install some small bridges here, or at least re-grade and gravel it.

ecurbh took some of the pictures today, so I have to be in some :~\

The new section of trail we went on today was really nice. All freshly re-graded and gravelled, where gravel was needed.

On a break...

And onward :~D

These (below) are Cyn's ears, so she's leading at this point. She was funny... she'd go along really well in front for awhile, and then she'd just ~stop~, like she didn't want to lead on anymore....

The first time she stopped and didn't want to go, it was at a steep place with a bridge coming up, and Bay and I just passed and let her follow. No need to push it there. Later on, ecurbh got back in front and she got the willies again, remarkably, we were almost back to the truck then. I guess she didn't know that.

These are Cyn's ears... ecurbh leading.

And back at the trailer! :~D This ride was about 8 miles probably, which I think is the perfect distance, not too long and tiring, not so short that we don't break a sweat. We even did a little more trotting today, as the horses felt good.

A trail ride *movie* for those of you with Windows Media Player and broadband (or patience!) (08-21-05 trail ride movie.avi) - right click and 'save target as' (recommended) to save it and play it from your desktop instead of streaming. It'll play smoother that way.

JP, is 21months, he can reach the pedals, but he can't pedal yet. He seemed fine tho just working the bucket. After he dumped it each time he clapped for himself, and wouldn't stop till all of us had clapped for him:) He's not going to be rotten at all:) Jenny's baby will be a rude awakening for him.

It was right a t $100.

The picture made it look orange but it is actually red.

With you saying Bay has such high withers, I would have thought his would have been narrower. Harley doesn't have alot of wither.

I was about ready to report abuse:)

I figured out what you meant:) He had a blast filling it with the blocks then dumping it.

Well, I could take it apart sometime to look, I really don't remember, but he's fairly wide.

What beautiful photos! I especially like the way the path winds through the woods rather than going straight.
I am off out to mow before it gets dark (8:15pm). It is much cooler now, so while the boys are asleep, Emma can look after my phone and I will try and get as much done while I can still see! : )
Chat later.

Your trails are so pretty. I love all the fern. Do the trails just naturally stay so open or is maintanence done on them.

Did you ride about 2-3 hours then? I'm with you, that's just about perfect:)

They do maintenance. There are places where the brush needs to be cut back, in the open and young timber areas, where berries grow up fast and scratch you going by. But the trail we were on today, you could tell they were working on recently, all graded smooth, and a layer of gravel on top. We felt like the first people to use it, the trail was so nice. DNR and the prison crews do that kind of work.

But Backcountry Horsmen chapters have work parties to cut back brush, and we kindof look forward to doing that, when we pick a chapter to join.

What beautiful trails. I think in a previous life I was a wanted person :) - I look at the pictures and think, too many places for ambush, isn't that odd? It looks so pristine - sorta Jurrassic Park :)

Do you often see potential ambushes? Is that why you live where it's wide open for miles around maybe? :~D LOL

There is lots of potential for surprises, in areas where I've already ~seen~ bears, we make sure to make a lot of noise going down trail so they can retreat. Of course, in the areas where there's a high bank on one side, I think 'cougar'. You'll never see them before they hit you though.

But Bay hears other riders coming, and bicycles, long before we can see them. Some walkers startled him today, coming around a corner, they were too quiet.

We never see deer, yet, and there's lots up there. I don't know why exactly, exept they're typically hunkered down for the busiest time of day.

LOL - well I'm claustrophobic for sure. But, yes - when I'm out riding I always notice places where you could be ambushed by people or critters. Very, very odd I will admit.

Maybe not so odd... I look ahead for things that might make my horse jump ;~D

Well, I'm gonna hit the couch now for a bit... I'm pooped.
