The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I did feel the buckles on the stirrups, but I think that will get better over time.

I meant to ask you last night, do you leave those detacable knee rolls on? The lady at the store who says she is an English Rider, said those would be the first thing she'd get rid of. I like the feel of them.

Oh, the lady never said a thing about that to me. I may call her and see what she says.

He looks great in it! I like that pad you've got.... very tidy.

You lose some of the functionality that you're used to, to tie bags or things to it for trail. You can buy buy a small bag that will fit a water bottle in it that will snap to your two rings on the back. And, as you can see on the pics on the last page of mine, I also added other rings so I can use regular western saddle bags or tie my coat on as well. I carry some long leather thongs I can use to tie stuff to the rings. I also carry a small bag that clips to the front ring on mine. and I clip my camera case to the other front ring so it's easily accessible at all times! (hint hint)

I left them on, I like them too. You can move them to the exact right spot too.

It's so funny, believe it or not, I am picky about my saddle pads. I do realize I let that last one go way to long, but I had some major frustration going on, and reached the point I didn't care.

Anyway, on pads, I pick out what I like, and what I think will work best, then look at price. I don't want to skimp on the pad. I picked this one out, the lady said she uses this type and think they are best for long riding, their called a Ventilatior pad. Anyway, it was one of the cheaper ones:). $20. I lucked out there.

I think I will go ahead and get a breatcollar, maybe not to put a tie down on, but I do alot of hills. I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it. The hills at the CTR I'm going to are even more then here.

I'm trying to get my saddle compartment in my trailer cleaned out. It's a mess. But, OH, it's so hot out there. 5 minutes and sweat is just pouring off me everywhere....yuk. Harley is wondering around the front yard grazing and he is dripping. It's suppose to rain tomorrow...and have some cooler temps....fingers crossing.

I do wish they made that type of pad in the shape of the white fluffy ones, I think it would even look better. But sometime soon after I get Mack paid back for all this I'll get one of those for special occasions.

If the saddle fits him well, you don't need a lot of pad under this saddle. The padding is in the saddle itself. Some of the English show pads are so thin they are really more of a sheet to keep the saddle clean than a pad. I'm using a fuzzy black one now, which is better than white for not looking dirty. I have a white one too, and a larger square pad like yours that has pockets built in. I don't have pics that show it real well, but if you want to see it, I'll go take pics of it.

I did find pics that show each of the kinds of breastcollar I do have. The first would work with a tie down that clips to the chest ring.

The one he's wearing below I actually like better for holding the saddle forward, and it can be attached to either the small high front rings or to the girth billets, depending on where it fits the horse's build better. But it wouldn't work with a tie down, it doesn't connect between the legs to the cinch at all.

This is the little bag I put my water bottle in.

I like that single strap breast collar too, and I think it would work for a tie down. the only reason you need a breast collar for the tiedown is to put a keeper string on, a loop of cord, to run the tiedown strap thru. It's just to keep the strap from baggin down when they put their head down for water or a bite and allowing them to step thru. I think you could put a loop on that.

They make (and I got one) a leather loop that has a D ring that you slip the girth thur and that gives you a ring to clip the tie down too.

Oh - OK - the single strap would work then. I thought you clipped the tie down to the breast collar ring.

If you get the single strap kind, try it both connected to your cinch buckles (you have to have your your cinch buckled evenly up both sides) and also when connected to the high rings.

It's easier, tacking up, to attach it to the high rings. but if Harley's neck is set lower on his chest than Bay's is, it can look like it's cutting into his neck attached that high.

I'd like to get some more rings to hook things too, but I'm not sure where to take it. The shop I go to for my western saddle, they don't do any English, and I can just imagine the comments I'd get if I took it to them:).

I think i many have a little bag I can hook to the two in the back.

I've seen those pads with the pockets on the sides, that would be great to keep my map in at a CTR.

My biggest problem will be carrying a halter and lead rope. We have too. And I hate leaving all that on the horse. It makes for so much crap on their heads. I've always tied it to the back of my western.

I could get one of those hatler/bridle combos, and a real long heavey set of reins that doubles as a rope....

I wrap the lead rope around and around Bay's halter, as small and tidy as I can make it, and clip that to the rings on my saddle using the lead rope snap. You can also clip it to the front rings. I've found a pic that sortof shows it, though both halter and lead rope are black and hard to see. The ~good~ thing about taking a thousand pictures is that ~one~ of them might show something you need to show later :~D

The rings can come later... The added rings on mine were done by a guy who does really good work, taking it apart and putting it back together. Anyone you take it to won't have done many of these before, but if you can show him an aussie saddle that has them all the way around, he will at least know what to aim for.
