The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Sounds like Rusty was perfect. You should be proud of him! To be taken to a new place and behave himself that much was fantastic. As for the dog, he sounds like he did just fine with him too, what you would expect and the people should ahve known that.
If they dont want him, its because they need a stone ornament horse not a real one!
BTW....Good morning!~ It's Deaconjims one day off today and we are going grocery shopping. The kids have already schooled 5 days this week, I do it Sat whan Deaconjim is at work and some Sundays too.
We will be taking one of the puppies to its new home tommorow too! : ( I just dont know if I can ever let my dogs have puppies again. I want to keep them all, but I know that is unrealistic!
I still have a few left unsold and am getting e-mails daily about them. I'm just too soppy when it comes to animals.
Misty went on a very long trail ride this week and we were told how pleased they were with her. She goes through water, mud, creeks, overgrown places without hesitation and never paused. Best trail horse ever for them! She was a lead trail horse when we bought her and loves it!

Lightning, now gelded, was put in the field for a while with the mares and another gelding and ran the other gelding off! He now has 3 mares in heat and because the operation was recent the first mare, could be pregnant!
Mark says he is a real ladies man! LOL
They love him!
Well i need to get out of the door and hit the floor running to get everything done on Deaconjims day off.
Have a great day, and I;ll catch up later.

Have a great day.

I thought Rusty did good, even with the dog, but I also understand the ladies fear. After you've been dumped it's hard to get your confidence back. From what I've gathered she rode all the time but never took a fall till this past year, and now has been bucked off by 2 horses.

Morning!

I'd be hard pressed to think that ~any~ horse wouldn't spook with a great big dog lunging and barking at them.

That woman needs to go somewhere and take lessons until she gets her confidence back, instead of jacking you around. Bud never spooks either, you could set him on fire and he wouldn't do anything, but a dog lunging at him would do it. It's the prey animal instinct.

LOL, yeah, I think it would be the exception for a horse NOT to spook in that circumstance. Hair, would Bay? Another funny thing about it is, she has sold that dog, and he will be leaving her house today:)

She is a very good rider, she just has gotten a phobia about bucking. She'll even laugh about how much she is afraid of a horse starting to buck with her. But that's what I understand. When your standing on the ground we all realize how silly some of our fears are, but you get on and it's a whole new ballgame. I think it's just going to take time and alot of riding for her to get over it, and she is doing that somewhat. She wants to ride a couple times a week for a couple hours each time. She's trying to get me to commit to every Tues and Thurs, which I will probably do, I just don't want to "commit".

If a dog he didn't know was there lunged at him out of the blue? Of course! He wouldn't ~buck~ like Rusty didn't buck, but he can sure jump sideways and spin around. The key safety element is not that they have NO instant reaction to being surprised, it's that they remain controllable after the surprise happens... that they dont' run off, that they don't buck. If she's expecting a horse to have no reflexes at all she'd have a stupid horse with no instinct for self-preservation that might just walk her off a cliff wall someday ;~D

Heh... Bay would have snorted at all the statues and yard furniture. He'd have gotten over it, but he loves to blow at stuff like that.

The lady ~might~ have better luck looking at very old, very seasoned horses, or maybe a mule, or she just might never find a new horse she trusts. I wish her luck.

That's why I asked you if Bay would spook. Being an older very seasoned horse.

I think she knows all that. I just don't know if she is really ready to buy. I think she's got some conflict. she wants to have two so her husband can go with her, but she's just got some conflict on what she/he needs/wants.

Well, but Bay's an Alpha A-Rab horse, so they snort because they think they look pretty doing it! No amount of seasoning stops it completely :~D

Any horse with a heartbeat would be surprised at the dog.

Speaking of spooky horses, I'm going trail riding again tomorrow.

Here's hoping I actually manage to keep from bouncing around in the saddle during a trot!

Not to mention, I'll specifically request that I don't get Foyt if I see that BlackJack will be part of the group again.

Rusty's reaction was a jump sideways, a spin away from the fence, but he didn't even get one stride in before he stopped for me. I immediatly turned him to look at the fence, and that was it. I thought he did great under the circumstances. He never even snorted. Just stood and looked for a few seconds, then when I asked he turned and walked on around, picked up the trot and lope just fine even past the fence.

I figure the only way to learn is keep riding! LOL!

I'm sure I'll eventually get the hang of it. It may just take a while since I'm only riding 3 hours a month.

I think he did great too, but she saw it through her fear. I think she's been scared by spooks more than actual bucking, and knows it but calls it 'bucked off'. If she really wanted to know if he'd buck, she'd have you run him full out slappin' him on the ass. She's afraid she'll come off in one of those spook and spins.

You know in my experience, bucking is usually not something they do in a spook situation, but for some reason alot of people think it is. That horses will buck over everything. I've come to think bucks are usually done because the horse is feeling good and being playful, or because there is a tack problem, not because of a spook and other then that, they really don't buck often, spooks are dealt with with spins and run aways. Like you said, judging a good horse is how quick do they stop for you. But it does take some experience for a rider to learn to react properly when a horse does that. And unfortunately the only way to get the experience is to go thru it several times. It's one of those tough learning curves.

Oh and a horse will buck if they are barn sour or herd bound. But I think that's usually the only time they'll buck out of orneryness. The day she rode him here last week, she said she could tell he wasn't bad to be herd bound, I trotted ahead of her and she said he didn't seem to mind.

Yeah - Only time I've seen a spook/runaway turn into bucking was when the rider was slipping around, saddle and all, clinging in vain. Then the horse bucked a couple times to shake her loose.... She needed it, there was no other way for it to end at that point but with her on the ground. ;~D

Horses that are broke might buck/hop a little if you are slapping them on the ass, particularly at a refusal, or if they are feeling good and you run them out.

...I pointed that out to Julia and told her to tell her neighbor she wouldn't know a pretty horse if she saw one,LOL...

LOL! Yeah, tell her she wouldn't know one if it walked up and bit her in the @$$! ;o)

I've never run into anyone that didn't think roans were beautiful....do your roans get lots of compliments?

Yes I do. I guess it's just because you don't see roans as often as other colors. People will walk up from a long ways off and either say how pretty they are, or what an unusual color they are. Of course that's just the people who like 'em. The ones who don't aren't gonna walk up and say "Jeez, that horse sure is an ugly color". I might have to smack 'em if they did. ;o)

Your blue roans are particularly unusual. I'd probably walk up to look at them myself!
