The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Seriously, I wanted to ask you something though. Can horses smell electricity? My BIL says when Okie sees the hot wire be brakes and won't go near it. He says though that Sarah Lee will sniff at it and if it's off she goes through it but doesn't touch it, if on. Can she really tell if it's hot or not.

I wouldnt have thought that Sarah Lee could tell, i mean I cant tell unless i get zapped whether its on or not, but you can sometimes hear it if it is shorting on something like long grass. I;m waiting to see what Hair or others say about this....we are planning on puttin a gelding that my friend wants us to look after for a few weeks in an electric fence. He is used to electric, but is not the easiest of horses and I would hate for him to get out!

Definately, they can either smell it or hear it.... not sure which. Safe to say, they can ~sense~ it without touching it. Many horses will walk up and appear to sniff it before deciding whether it's hot.

I was thinking maybe her whiskers touch it and she can tell. I dunno. My BIL doesn't exagerate and he said she acts like she smells it before deciding.

Just leave it on when he's there! Any of them really.... Electric fences are only good if they're on. :~D

Some horses will take your word for it that it's a fence. I could probably keep Bay in with a rope tied around four trees. Some of the smarty pants horses have figured out the 'lectricity thing. Every time I've put up some kind of temp fencing that isn't hot, the pony goes right through it.

i think they can figure out if it's on or not, how I don't know. If my fence is off for a few days, Rocky knows and will go thru it. It does take him a day or two, so I'm not sure what he does.

We had a Arab one time that figured out if he went thru it fast enough it wouldn't get him. That's when we finally had to get real fence. That horse was determined to go home. He paced the fence for two years in the direction of his old home, and headed that way every chance he got. The last time was on a New Years Eve, we caught up with him about a mile down the road. he would have went all the way but ran into fence line, and some people found him and locked him in their pasture. We just got lucky that we weren't far behind him. I think he would have been at the sell the next day.

Oh, and I keep all my horses in my front yard with fake hot wire that goes across the driveways. I think they are exposed enough to real hot wire every day that they don't test the fake stuff because they aren't out there for days at a time. The same for the small run I have behind the house. It's a fake hot fence, but they seem content to stay there. But I don't keep one back there unless I'm home and never over night.

Becky, I was just catching up on posts, and to help with the itching (And it sounds like she has a flea allergy) a shot of hydrocortisone (sp) will help immensely. I had a cat who was really allergic to fleas, and while we could get away with using Advantage, the shot helped too, because her skin would get all dry and raw from the itching. Incidentally, if you do have cats, make sure that you get the proper flea treatment. Dog flea treatment can kill a cat.

Sometimes you can hear the fence ticking if it's touching somewhere.

When we have a horse in our three fields that have electric, it's switched on. I once forgot to switch on the power to the small field that Lightning sometimes had access to from his large field and he went to the edge and after about 30 mins he pushed down the wire to see what would happen....luckily i saw him and as soon as he backed off I threw the switch and it was hot again! He didnt try to touch it again so I guess he heard? Smelt ? it.

Emma and I have been having fun finding all sort of things for the puppies to play with! : ) Their favorite is some 16" wide PVC pipe (very strong) that they are using as tunnels! you should see them scampering after each other! Lots of fun!

Thanks Beaker. My old vet that died use to give her shots of something that helped with the itch. I just didn't know what it was. Thanks. I think I'll run her in Mon. I can't stand to see her scratching much more. I have a cat that comes in the house, he doesn't seem to be as bothered as Susie. Susie isn't infested with them, so I'm assuming like you that it is a flea allergy that is causeing her the most grief.

Rocky is so funny when he accidently touches the hot wire. He snorts and throws his head around and prances around:). I know how he feels tho, when I touch it its enough to make me cuss:)
