The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Anyone with dogs:

I am having a horrible time this year with fleas on my Jack Russell Susie. The poor thing is just scratching 24/7. I've tried everything, does anyone have any suggestions? She has fleas back on her the day after I give her a bath, but the funny thing is, even tho she is an indoor dog, I'm not having trouble with them biting or getting on us, just Susie.

Advantage.... or the equivalent for down there that also treats for ticks - I think it's called Front line.

It's drops that go on in between the shoulder blades on their back, every two months. If you treat all the dogs, (and possibly cat??) you will not have fleas. You buy it by weight, so you'll have to get two different dosages. They come in an eight-pack.

They now sell it over the counter up here, but it used to be we had to get it from the vet. If it's still prescription there, all the vet will need to know is the weights and they may prescribe without seeing them.

I found that once the fleas were gone, I could get away with just treating one of my dogs. Fleas only spend 30% of their time on the animal, so they move around, and eventually hit the treated dog.

I've been flea free here all summer by treating them once earlier in the year. Heh... I snuck a treatment onto our neighbor's dog too, just because he was all itched raw and miserable... and was bringing new fleas around.

I use to use that stuff and had very good results. But last year it just didn't work and i asked the vet that died about it. He said that fleas have become immune to it around here and it's not working anymore. He told me he had some new stuff, a dip, that worked great and I could get it from him this year. Of course I can't now, and I didn't get the name of it. I think I'm just going to run to the vets at Pet Smart Mon and see what they suggest, I need to get her tapeworm wormer:(, and she needs her nails clipped.

Huh. Problems, then, if that stuff doesn't work. I've never had luck with collars, sprays or dips... shampoos seem to kill the fleas that are on them but not keep them off.

Exactly what I'm running into.

She's just so miserable, she chews on her paws, and scratches, and whines sometimes. Sometimes at night she scratches all night, and then seems really out of it the next day, acts tired:(.

She may have developed a flea allergy too.... My little dog became super oversensitive to fleas in her old age. A shot of prednizone would stop the itching too... sometimes when they've itched themselves to the point where they're raw... it still itches and feeds on itself even after the fleas are gone.

We have never had problems with fleas, we do the frontline thing and it seems to work, but reading your post it sounds to me that the fleas have laid their eggs in your house, and even though your dog is shampood etc, as soon as she hits the floor the new fles just jump right on, deaconjim isnt indoors right now, but i know he would suggest you getting the house done, (even though they are not getting on you).
Deaconjim has just come in so I am going to let him take over this answwer! : )
Deaconjim: I owned a pest control business for many years, and fleas were always troublesome. She is getting the fleas from her bedding or somewhere that she spends her time, a place where you don't usually go. If she has fleas, though, you will have flea eggs anyplace she has been, and they can lie dormant for up to six months.

The best way to treat her and the house is with a flea spray that has an insect growth regulator (IGR) that will stop the life cycle and prevent more fleas. Vacuum any areas that you will be treating before you spray, and wash all bedding. You will need to do all of this and spray your dog at the same time to prevent re-infestation. It may be worth you while to have this done by a pest control company. If you do, use a locally owned company and stay away from the national chain companies.

One thing Deaconjim has to add is that you need to also treat the area outside where she goes. Also you need to treat it aggresively before it turns into a major problem, which wont take long if left.

The red 36 chevy with the slat bed was a fire truck. They still have the equipment if the new owner wants it.

Sincerely

Sissy

I had to buy something from York Photo or lose my host. I ordered a calendar with the kids pictures. It's so cute. I'm going to order another with the horses.

Har, har, har! That was so funny, I almost forgot to laugh...... : )

IHC stands for International Harvester Corporation. Now known as Navstar.

Here is a picture of an older IHC farm truck.

Thanks! It is a nice truck!

I still have my old firetruck. The mechanics never did show up to fix the brakes.

Do me a favor and remind me to never buy a large farm truck again unless it has airbrakes. No more hydraulic brakes on farm trucks for me. The trucks are only driven a couple of weeks each year. The rest of the year they are parked and hydraulic brakes do not last long in a parked truck. Airbrakes will last much longer with reasonable care.

Remember that if you decide to look at an old schoolbus to use as a camper. Make sure it has airbrakes....
