This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Hurry up with them pics... I'm waiting on ya before I go mow!
LOL! I caught the pic, last week? Of yur pasture belly high on the horses! Then I spoke to my friend that is looking after all our horses etc and in the two weeks we haev been gone our grass is not far behind!
We are making great time today, and have just entered Jackson TN. It looks like a really nice clean city.
Yep - it's out of control! It's called canary grass, and the horses won't eat it.
Oddly enough, many of the local hay fields are full of it. They like it I bet, because it grows tall and fast. Gives them a lot of bulk to bale. Only problem is, the horses would rather lay in it than eat it.
The farm we are praying for, is alongside STROUTHER creek.
Are Squarebarbs photos on hobbithole? If so what is the link? ..................please : )
I apologize in advance for so many pics!
Here I am getting ready. I hadn't stood up in the stirrups yet to get my heels down, so forgive my posture. I shoulda known this horse would be trouble. ;-D
We head out to the trails! I'm on Foyt and Becky got Mocha again. Lucky her! She was so happy!
There was another horse with us today named BlackJack. He was pretty tough and stocky looking with a gorgeous tail that practicaly dragged behind him. Well, unbeknownst to me, he and my horse Foyt have a long-standing fued.
When he hit the pasture, Foyt wanted to go for a trot and I tried holding him back a bit because BlackJack was too close to us. He'd tried to nip at Foyt a couple of times already and I didn't trust him.
Well, Foyt started to fight me a bit and I turned his head back towards me.
Just then, BlackJack (who had another inexperienced rider on him) comes charging at Foyt and Foyt takes off with me totally unprepared!
My feet flew out of the stirrups and I held on to the saddle with one hand, while I used my legs and the reins to slow Foyt down. And I did it!
I took him over to the watering station and had the trail leader hose him (and I) down. We stayed FAR away from BlackJack the rest of the ride. I was terrified and there was a good 5 seconds there where I seriously questioned whether or not I'd be able to hold on.
We got back safe and sound though. :-D
I let Becky say goodbye to her new best friend.
And that was our adventure!
It's Ruthy - and no - she didn't post pics yet.... just a story that on the ride, another horse went after hers, her horse lurched away and she feared coming off, but stayed on. I'm sure she'll tell the story again when she gets the pics up.
She said she thinks she didn't keep her seat, because she lost her stirrups, but I think, if she stayed on, she kept her seat well enough!
Great pics.... They both look like nice horses. What can I say about the pecking order problems between the horses.... of course she should have controlled her horse, but she lacks experience too. I'm just glad no one got hurt and you stayed on for the rest of the ride!
Oh my goodness! You were lucky you didnt get seriously hurt. The owner of the trail rides and horses should have known better.
Well, now I'm off to mow... I piddled away the cool hours of morning, so I'll probably not be out there too long before wearying of the idea, but I'm gonna give it a go.
I don't blame anybody except myself for the mishap today.
I'm learning to get better control of the horse every time I ride. Losing my timidity is key to letting the horse feel more comfortable with letting me be the boss.
I should have been more forceful with Foyt and slowed him down before we reached the pasture. But we were both enjoying ourselves and looking forward to the open space before I realized that BlackJack had slowed down to wait for Foyt at the entrance of the pasture.
The guy riding BlackJack had only been on a horse this one time and he was probably more frightened than I was, to tell the truth.
But I've definitely got more confidence now since one of my worst fears actually happened and I was able to control myself and the horse without either one of us getting hurt.
And Foyt and I enjoyed the hosing down we got once the terror part was over. :-D
Happy mowing! And don't let yourself overheat, chica.
If it's too hot, then it's too hot.
Tomorrow is another day.
God for you RMD! You should be proud of yourself. It sounds like you handled it perfectly.
Great pics. Hope each of your rides just gets better and better.
Thanks!
I'm finding bruises now that I know I must have gotten during the adventure, but they're mostly on my hands.
I must have slammed my hand on the saddlehorn when Foyt took off and now that I've cooled off, the aches and spots are appearing.
I'm glad Foyt didn't get hurt with me bouncing on his back like a 150lb sack of cement, pulling his head around towards my leg. I imagine he's feeling some soreness too.
But the only way I could figure to stop him was to change his direction and get him to do a few circles before slowing down.
That is So pretty, you are certainly gifted!
We are now in Alabama making good tme! We are on HWY 72 and the scenery is very pretty.
Alabama is very pretty.
Although I'll always be a pit partial to Tennessee just because I remember driving through there every year as a kid on my way up to Chicago.
Just beautiful.
I'm reining in Foyt here. BlackJack was just off to our left. Right in front of the horse in front of us.
This is a pic of Rebecca headed back.
