The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It's dread, mon.

It is, well and truly.

We're home again, briefly. Our first stop this morning was to pick up a rental car, because we were going to put our nused* car in the shop before heading to San Antone... it's had the "check engine" light on since Tuesday. Anyway, turned our the gas cap was not on tight enough, which triggered an "evaporative something-or-other" sensor and turned on the light. Technician hooked up a hand unit, read the error and reset the sensor. Took five minutes, no charge.

Went and got breakfast and decided to keep the rental anyway, 'cause it's a much nicer ride. We'll return it when we get home tonight. And now we're off again, to S.A. this time, to get our eyeballs checked.

*nused: new, used

Rose has had the same eye doctor since she was a girl... when she moved to Austin from S.A. she didn't want to get a new doctor, and when I moved down here I just started going to the same one.

Since we only see him every other year for regular check-ups, it's not really much of an imposition... more like a mini-holiday.

Makes sense, especially if you find someone you trust.

Back...only got a couple of books, a few of which are ones I've read but didn't own. It wasn't a HUGH sale, and it was crowded, so I didn't stick around too long.

Apparently their really big sale is in October at the mall, which is basically across the street from us. Could easily wander over there several times a day as they put out new stuff. Danger!

I picked up bread supplies. Gonna start that in a sec. First I'm having a nice Brown Cow yogurt. Mmmm...chocolate.

Remind me...how much of that yeast do I need to use? I thought it was a couple of teaspoons, but I couldn't remember for sure.

Hey guys, am wondering if any of y'all would object to me pinging you to an e-show I will be doing. I have just signed on as an Usborne Books consultant, and they offer us the ability to do an 'e-show' where "guests" have 10 days to look at the site, and order books through my link. Anything you order will be delivered directly to you, so there is no hassle there, but it would also help me towards getting books for my homeschool curriculum as well.

If you don't want to be pinged, just let me know!

One and a half is equal to 1 pkg of yeast.

And it doesn't require proofing. So if the recipe calls for putting yeast in with some warm water or something, you can skip that part...just dump it in with the flour.

And my understanding is you don't even have to let it rise twice. But I always do anyway. I follow the recipe except for the proofing.

Thanks!

Going to be cinnamon honey whole wheat. It'll be heavy, I think, but that's about what I wanted. I may do small round loaves on a cookie sheet instead of normal loaves.

Or freeze some of the dough as I'd thought about. I haven't decided. I'm not good at handling too many choices!

My mom was just telling me that I'm crazy to be feeding my kids milk I'd stuck up in the attic in a jar. I tried to tell her that it's not milk when I bring it down, it's cultured yogurt. She thinks it's rotten milk. I tried to tell her that rotten milk doesn't have a fresh tangy taste or creamy texture, it's gotta rotten taste and curdled texture and oh, a nasty smell!

It doesn't make any difference.

And the fact that this entire conversation took place in my head doesn't really make any difference either.

Well, not with the yogurt anyway. ;-)
