The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!
Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Let them go! Let them go!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I think "fall is coming" may be a tad premature.Well, maybe you're right... I was just trying to think positively. ;)
The hottest temperature I've ever experienced in Austin was 112F... that's actual, in-the-shade air temperature, not heat index or anything like that.
That was on Sept. 5, 2000.

You wouldn't think positive about fall if you had 16 oak trees in your yard...(dropping their leaves already because of the heat and lack of rain)...

A friend of mine, some years ago, coined the term "paper acre" as a unit of measure for the quantity of crap accumulated on ones' desk... referring of course to the total area that the paper would take up if it were spread on the ground one layer thick. Used in a sentence it would be "No, I'm sorry, I can't take on that project right now. I still have two paper acres to clear before I get any more."

No oak trees, just a yard of dead grass despite a water bill twice what it is in the "winter".
I'm thinking positively, because our month of 100 degree temps and no rain was in June. So far, July has been fairly "mild" compared to that, with temps only in the mid-to-high 90s and the occasional rain shower/thunderstorm.
So, while everyone else is complaining about the heat, I'm saying, "been there, done that"... or maybe, "Welcome to the party, pal!" (movie ref!)

It's been hot here for several weeks. Just getting up in to the high 90s/100s this week though. But even though it's ~felt~ like storm weather just about every afternoon, we've had little rain.
Naybers all water their grass. I don't bother. I do water the garden stuff though.
I'm signin' off folks. Gotta get my backside back to thegym in the a.m.
g'nite

Hah! Hey P.E... long time no see...
What is that? New Jersey? Missouri?
I've had the honor of having New Jersey firing those big 16 inchers over my head at a shore target. They were about five or six miles offshore, and we were about two miles offshore, in between them and the 'splosions.
It was neato. :-)
Those things make really, really big noises. :-)
