Hah! That's sort how most mornings feel.
Need coffee.
That is awful!
Well, we're a step up on that one...we're using a ShootMoot knife. It's very sharp.
I didn't realize you were doing your own butchering.
Yes ma'am.
Even this aspect will be done with the utmost care, in an effort to be humane and also clean.
Mornin'.
I get queasy just thinking about the "one second' though. No animal should suffer needlessly.
</ PETA-sounding whine >
Thank God for that!
I don't want any part of a hurricane this year.
Check in with me next year. Maybe I'll feel a bit more daring.
I'm impressed!
I don't thinking you sound like a peta person! Any reasonable person would feel the same. No one wants an animal to suffer.
That's my whole purpose behind raising my own meat and egg-laying chickens. It doesn't mean I'm gonna quit buying eggs or frozen chicken breasts any time soon, but really, egg-laying hens in battery houses (where grocery store eggs come from) live a life of misery, as do the meat chickens you get at the grocery store or KFC.
I can't do anything about that. But MY meat and egg chickens are going to live decent lives. Maybe one day I won't have to buy those mistreated animals, but until then, I will. We gotta eat.
I'm not one to look down on someone else for buying storebought chicken, is what I'm saying. I hope I never come across that way...I still buy the stuff myself! Wings 2 Go is my favorite place to eat! :-)
But just like home grown veggies taste better, I'm betting homegrown chicken will too.
I'll let you know, one way or another. If I don't like the taste, I won't do it again, you can be sure!
Don't be impressed yet! It's liable to be a disaster! We've never done it before!
But like I say, I've been reading as much as I can find on the topic...hopefully we're ready.
Well, I'm counting on hearing how much better a fresh chicken tastes! LOL!
But if they're going to be food, it ain't needless...
Tastes like chicken...
It's a hard thing. Most of my experience with butchering occurred when I was little and my family raised goats and rabbits and chickens. I got too attached to the critters (what's a girl to do??). In the years since I've been able to reflect back on it as an important and formative experience. Everyone should know where their food comes from and what it takes to get it on the plate.
A suffering animal releases adrenalin, which taints the taste of the meat. Any hunter will tell you meat tastes better if the shot was clean.
I wish you guys were here with me...but only two little chickens won't be enough for us all anyways.
Maybe the next moot?
Both of you got me laughing over here!
*Imagining 2J and a car full of chickens coming to RockyMootain*
Heh heh heh!!!
It's like I told Steve, (whom I'm so glad I married, even after all these years, because he never ridicules me even when I'm silly), even if these chickens "taste just like chicken" from the store...that's ok. Because these chickens had the life of riley for their short lives! Sunshine, grass, crickets and dust baths!
HA HAHA!!!
What a hysterical mental picture!
