Art Appreciation/Education "test" #1

I thought I’d take a leaf from Liz’s book and do a quasi test on line. No grades (the best kind of test). Some of these were in the posts, but I also thought I’d get similar works by the same artists (and a couple of new ones) just to really challenge you.

See if you can identify any of the above artists and perhaps their periods. Titles are difficult, as I found these on the internet. If you can't get them right off, then do a search for the artists we looked at in our "classes" and see if you can identify them then.

I would also love further discussion about any of these pieces. Do you like them? Why or why not? Have our discussions opened your eyes at all? Why or why not?

Ouch! These are hard. I know a couple

5. Monet-don't know the title-Impressionism

6. Renoir- don't know the title "The Dance" perhaps? He's my favorite Impressionist artist.

8. Van Goh- Self Portrait

12. Picasso?

16. Salvador Dahli?

I absolutely LOVE Renoir. I love the color and emotion in his works. He paints situations which reflect "good times" in life. I have several prints in my home, and they bring me such joy.

You've picked several of my favorites (2. Goya and 3., 4. Homer) so of course I knew those right off. Goya's naughty ladies are unmistakeable - and it was clever of you to pick two such different Homers.

The first one's a Manet (but why is the second lady painted so differently from the first? Her face is as flat as a piece of paper).

5. is a Monet, but it's so well known it's almost cheating.

6. Renoir. That face! That hair!

7. Cezanne.

8. Vincent, with ear.

9. & 10. Matisse - but you showed us these before.

11. Beats me. Kandinsky?

12. Picasso, I think.

13. I'm a philistine, but it could be anybody.

14. Magritte? Not really otherworldly enough.

15. Miro. I like Miro for some reason.

16. Dali. I REALLY like Dali. Always have.

17. I do not care. I find this sort of "art" truly revolting.

18. O'Keefe. Gorgeous.

19. must be the "industrial realist" artist you mentioned in your last class . . . who painted the River Rouge auto plant . . . can't remember his name but I like his work.

I see we agree on a few of these. Wonder if we're right?

I used to know alot more about art than I do now. I still appreciate it. I just can't remember the names of the artists or works.

I confess that I have not studied much more beyond Impressionism. I love it! Suits my tastes. I should have know Manet.

I LOVE this work by Renoir. I love the color, the dimension, the happy faces. It reflects what is good in life. Friends, fun. My favorite painting of all time which hangs in my home.

They do look like they're having a great time.

But tell that silly woman to get her dog off the table! Cats on the table, o.k., but really!

All Renoir's women have such beautiful hair!

Right now I'm into the WPA art of the 1930's, especially Georges Schreiber. I've been collecting his prints. I really like the depictions of rural Americana. If you're not familiar with his works, Google his name and some of his works like "From Arkansas", "Mare and Colt" and "I Sell Turkeys and Ducks". Schreiber also did alot of patriotic posters and military art for Abbott Labs.

Another thing I love about paintings of the time is that women looked wholesome and were not "thin". To have a little meat on your bones was beautiful.

I won't go so far as Rubens's ladies (they are a little too zaftig for me) but in general you're right, women should have curves where women ought to have curves.

I have not seen this artist before. I did a Google and looked at about 6 different works.

I can see why you like them. They are very dramatic. The black and white gives them a sort of melancholy feel.

You are right. If they were in color the effect wouldn't be the same.
