Notes:

American Nick Hayden won his first Grand Prix in front of a home crowd this afternoon, dominating the race for his first GP win. Hayden led from the start and maintained a two second lead for most of the race. He was never challenged for the lead. Hayden had a one second gap over second place after the first lap.

Colin Edwards made a spirited run to try and catch Hayden, passing his team-mate Valentino Rossi on lap four for second place. Edwards sliced the gap from himself to Hayden to less than 1.8 seconds at one point but he was unable to get any closer.

Alex Barros and Marco Melandri crashed out of the race in turn 11. Melandri was in second place in points coming into this event. Carlos Checa also crashed.

Hayden did his victory lap with his father, Earl, on the back of his RC211V machine. Some of the 57,932 fans who attended the race today (153,635 total for the weekend) stormed the track on the cool-off lap.

Great event, great food, great racing, great fans, great history, and great location for the US round of MotoGP! Cannery Row in Monterey, CA closed to cars each night as bikes by the thousands take over.

If you were part of the crowd, I hope you had a great time, if not, the race next year is July 23rd 06!

Holy COW!! I'm picking hubby up from the airport at 1:30 - he's flying home from attending this race!! :o) He and his pals called me when Checa went down - they could see the crash but couldn't tell who it was. I had to scan back on Tivo to find out for them! LOL!!!

Hi Fierce-

Could you imagine being that talented on a motorcycle? It must make driving on the freeway at 65 m.p.h. feel like an amusement park ride to them.

These guys are nuts!

Not "nuts" at all, just some of the very best motorcycle riders in the world. In fact, there are alot of people who agree that Valentino Rossi (46) may be the best rider in the world today, and once of the very best ever.

Plus, it was really wonderful to see the "Bumble Bees" out and racing again! It brought back some amazing memories, even though there were a number of "Roberts" at the track, but none were wearing those colors.

At least on the track they don't have to contend with cars attacking them.

Automobiles nearby or not...Nicky Hayden is still a better rider than me. Like maybe 100x better.

Anyone who pushes themselves and their machine that close to the edge is nuts. I have great admiration for them.

I raced atv's and karts back when my dad paid the bills and I was good at it, but I didn't have what it took to be that close to the edge like these guys do every corner. Fear and personal preservation instincts took over for me.

There MUST be a typo.

I don't see a mention of Team Harley.

They were in the 'slow race' behind the dance hall. :-)

I am really happy for him. The race couldn't have been won by a nicer guy. I really wish I could have watched this race. I have been waiting for Hayden to win since he switched over to MotoGP. They play the races here on Sunday night around midnight but the race hadn't started yet so they played Formula 1 instead. Hopefully they will show it next sunday.

I was at the last race of the last season that they were competing (I think that Scott Russel was riding for them, but it's been too many years). That bike had one of the most distinctive sounds... It stood out, even from the RC51 and Ducati 996 big twins.

Great race and racing weekend ~ motorcycle racing rocks!

I was really bummed out when Tommy Haden, riding the 22 Kawasaki bike crashed out while he was leading in the Super Stock race... How cool a weekend would it have been to have Tommy or Roger Lee Hayden on the podium the same day that Nicky got his first MotoGP win!?!?!?! Earl would have been in tears.

In a completely unrelated comment, I really wish that Ducati were doing better this year. Last year was amazing, but I guess the changes they made have caused problems this year.

I'm a Suzuki fan; have been since I bought my first one in the 60's ~ I bought my first Harley 1n 1948.

The Hayden Bros do pretty good in the 600 class. :)

I think the '05 GSX-R1000 will win the rest of the AMA Superbike races this year, after they get the setup right, they only had a little over and hour test time on the new machines.

The Ducati's do pretty good in Superbike on the tight courses like Laguna Seca and Pikes Peak.

Yeah ~ their GP bikes have gone backwards, a little like the GP Suzuki's. :)
