Dog Is Killed By Firecracker
The Ledger ^ | 07/07/05

Hyperactive like the rest of her breed, the Jack Russell terrier named Kaylee would chase anything thrown her way.

And to the horror of adults and children at a family July Fourth picnic, she did just that when a powerful firecracker was thrown into her yard. She chased it down and was killed outright when it went off.

"I lost a family member," Joseph P. Kolinoski, 26, wrote in a statement to a Martin County sheriff's deputy.

Kolinoski said the family was celebrating in their yard when his wife's uncle drove by and threw the powerful firecracker about 5:30 p.m.

He said the 3-year-old, 8pound dog was buried shortly afterward.

Sgt. Jenell Atlas, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the firecracker was not illegal and there was no evidence of malice against the dog.

"Dog Is Killed By Firecracker"

No it wasn't. It was killed by a moron who decided that hurling a "firecracker" (most likely an M-80) into the backyard of a relative was a good idea.

As a person who use to work as a part time cop..

I would ask the Sheriff Deputy about the charge of criminal mischief because the firecracker was thrown into one yard to another persons property.

There was probably no malice in what the other person did.. but it did result in a tragic lost of a persons pet.

I myself use to enjoy firecrackers.. Its just a part of a tradition of the 4th to me.

The article says the firework was legal. That means it couldn't have been an M-80, those were banned in 1966.

Hard to imagine that a standard little firecracker could kill a Jack Russell. It probably had the maximum legal limit of 50 mg of flash powder. Many such firecrackers are sold under the name "M-80" even though they're not the real McCoy.

This moron threw a firecracker into a yard where a family with children was having a party. If it was powerful enough to kill a Jack Russell terrier, it could have killed or maimed a child too. Was he so sure of his aim (apparently from a moving vehicle), and so sure that no children were off in the corners playing "hide and seek" that he imagined this was a perfectly safe move? This guy should be facing some serious charges.
