I could care less what they say about psychiatry. Their theology has me a lot more concerned. Psychiatry is here and now. Your theology has to do with how you live your daily life AND where you spend eternity.
"Psychiatry is here and now"
Yes, it is here and now, but it is time for the lies to be exposed and the free ride they have enjoyed to stop. How many churches in America that were knowingly killing people could have surviving family sue them, and then when everything was hushed up, and all the survivors paids off, that "church" was allowed to gag everything, bribe and extort in order for silence on the court case, and then go on its merry way to the next group of victims?
That is in fact the fifteen year free ride anti-depressants have had in our society. Sure, court costs, and settlements do have an effect on the bottom line, but when you are raking in 7 million a day, who cares?
The numbers of American's on anti-depressants went from one in five to one in three in the years after 9-11. I believe it is time for psychiatry and the drug industry to own up to the mistakes that were made in unleashing these drugs on an ignorant public. Whistleblowers like Candace Pert, who helped discover the drugs, Ann Blake Tracy, and Peter Breggin have been hollering for years, writing articles, books, doing interviews, testifying in court.
Yet the band plays on...
If Scientology has the understanding and passion to expose these frauds for what they are, and the membership is willing to publicly work to expose some of it to the public, then I HAVE to believe this church has some good attached to it.
All I know about the church is that they have a phonics based literacy program which is teaching people how to read, and they have this anti-psychiatry drug and "take proper care of your body" teachings. That is all I know. But I believe we can discern truth in groups by the fruits of those groups. It Scientology is teaching it's members how to read and how to be mentally well without psychiatric drugs, then, I do believe they have some good positive things attached to their religion.
Thing is...Medicine is a religion. It functions just like a religion, with all of the priestly robes, and sacraments, and temples....It is one of the most unrecognized religions we have going. And it is in fact killing people every year by the thousands. No church in America could get away with this sort of a fraud. Why are we all so dumb to think that because doctors go to school for so long they know anything at all about health?
Read Robert Mendelsohns Confessions of Medical Heretic. It is a great read, and introduced me to the idea that medicine is a church.
I just posted my first week of Blogging at http://WWW.NaturalFamilyBlog.com I would be really interested to hear what you think of my introductory post Cheney chick, if you feel like you have the time to check it out, and want to respond.
I am going to spend some time reading up on scientologies theology, I have not done that yet, and if I am going to even suggest the idea that I could defend or affiliate with that church, I should know something about it. Thanks for challenging me on that.
However, I have no plans to give up my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is the best thing I have going in my life, and I consider it a great honor to be a part of this group.
I suppose in the heat of this conversation it was easy for all of us to say some things that were inflammatory and ironic.
