Agreed. 20th c. illustrators have done more to define their times than most "fine artists". Look at some of these iconic images:

I LOVE John Held, Jr.! What a charmer!

He also did some nifty, deliberately antique woodcuts, disguised social commentary, sort of like Dicky Doyle's ye customes of ye Englishe in 1842.
