Angels not interested in former Mariner Boone By Joe Haakenson, Staff Writer ANAHEIM -- The Angels are not likely to pursue second baseman Bret Boone, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners on July 3. According to a Mariners spokesman, Boone will be placed on waivers today, meaning any team that claims him will be responsible for the remainder of his $9 million salary this season. If, as expected, he clears waivers, Boone will be a free agent and available to any team at a pro-rated major league minimum salary of about $160,000 for the rest of the season. Even at that price, one Angels source said Boone probably wouldn't be a good fit because he needs to have consistent at-bats to be productive, and he probably wouldn't get them with the Angels because they are committed to the platoon of Juan Rivera and Jeff DaVanon in the designated-hitter spot. When all the regular starters are healthy and in the lineup, Chone Figgins is the DH. Boone, 36, hit .231 with seven homers and 34 RBI in 74 games for the Mariners this season. He's an Orange County native, having attended El Dorado High in Placentia, only a few miles from Angel Stadium. Finley rehabs: Center fielder Steve Finley went 2 for 4 in his rehab assignment for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday night and will be activated from the disabled list Thursday when the Angels return from the All-Star break to play the Minnesota Twins. Finley has struggled to a .225 average this season, affected by a sore right shoulder after running into the center-field wall in the second game of the season. Meanwhile, Orlando Cabrera fielded groundballs and threw from his shortstop position to first base Sunday morning to test his strained right elbow. The real test, though, will come Thursday when Cabrera takes batting practice for the first time since going on the DL. "Usually the last thing you do (in rehab) is the activity you were doing when you got hurt," Cabrera said. "And I got hurt taking a swing." The Angels hope Cabrera will be ready to return to the lineup by the weekend. Woods demoted: The Angels optioned pitcher Jake Woods to Triple-A Salt Lake after Sunday's game, clearing a spot for Finley. Woods, the club's only left-hander in the bullpen, was 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA in 27 games. Colon may start: With Toronto's Roy Halladay scratched from the All-Star game because of an injury, the Angels are anticipating Bartolo Colon will be the game's starting pitcher. If he does start and pitches more than one inning and up to 40 pitches, he might not return to the Angels' rotation until Sunday. If he pitches just one inning, he could return Friday or Saturday.
