1962: On this day beer can sized hail was reported to have fallen W of Dickinson, ND.
1997: Hail and MI are not usually synonymous. However, an unusual 6 A.M. storm produced 2.25" diameter hail for 20 min near Hollywood.. Near Barrien Springs, 1" hail took chunks out of fruit, $1.2 million in crop damage in a 2-mi swath. Furthermore, 13 tornadoes in SE lower MI set the single-day record for the area, killing two and injuring 97 and causing $100+ million damage in Detroit. At Grosse Pointe farms, straight-line winds of almost 100 mph blew a gazebo full of people into Lake Saint Clair (killing 5 and injuring 8).
Insects congregate in regions with rising air motions, such as sea breeze fronts. Birds are aware of this, and tend to flock to the saem regions to dine on these insects. Radar operators are aware of this since both bugs and birds provide large enough targets that the precipitation-free fronts can be tracked using these biological reflections.
