Set a Spell

Come join us here at Amy’s Place, I’m sure we can find room.
Don’t worry that disturbing us will somehow seal your doom.
We always welcome visitors. We’re glad to see you come,
And curiosity compels us to inquire where you’re from.

Some come here seeking wisdom. That makes our doggy laugh!
Companionship, I think you’ll find, is much the better half.
You can find poems everywhere, (at least I think I can,)
But friendliness is lots more fun, and much the better plan.

So pop on in, and share with us, a friendly word or two,
We’ll look around and try to find a cozy spot for you.
And all in all I think you’ll see, we’ll try to get things right.
So come on in and set a spell, you’ll find that we don’t bite.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

Thank you for today's repeat performance.

It is just as good the second time around.

This CIA agent is sent on an assignment to Ireland. When he gets there, he's supposed to meet a contact named "Murphy". When he meets his contact, he's supposed to identify himself by saying, "It's a lovely day, and I'm sure it will be even better tonight." So he arrives and heads to one of the pubs. Inside, he walks up to the bartender and says, "Excuse me, I'm looking for a man named Murphy." To which the Bartender replies, "Well, if you're looking' for Murphy the post man, he'll be at the post office, and Murphy the Police Man will be at the Police department, and if you're looking' for Murphy the Bartender, that's me." So the man thinks about it for a minute, and then says to the Bartender, "It's a lovely day, and I'm sure it will be even better tonight." And the Bartender says, "Oh, your looking' for Murphy the Spy, are yeh?"

Joy—Even In Poverty

Read:
Habakkuk 3:14-19

Though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; . . . yet I will rejoice in the Lord. —Habakkuk 3:17-18

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 15-17

cover In the book 450 Stories for Life, Gust Anderson tells about visiting a church in a farming community of eastern Alberta, Canada, where there had been 8 years of drought. The farmers' economic situation looked hopeless. But in spite of their poverty, many of them continued to meet together to worship and praise God.

Anderson was especially impressed by the testimony of a farmer who stood up and quoted Habakkuk 3:17-18. With deep feeling, he said, "Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls—yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation." Anderson thought, That dear saint has found the secret of real joy!

It's not wrong to find pleasure in the good things money can buy, but we should never rely on them for happiness. If our fulfillment depends on material possessions, we are crushed when we lose them. But if our joy is found in the Lord, nothing can disrupt it, not even economic distress.

Yes, those who know and trust the Lord can rejoice—even in poverty! —Richard De Haan

Pleasures of earth, so seemingly sweet,
Fail at the last my longings to meet:
Only in Thee my bliss is complete;
Only, blest Lord, in Thee. —Anon.

Happiness depends on happenings; joy depends on Jesus!

With weathered squint, his eyes shift.
Life pulse beat marks time trajectory
And sun's glint.

He is at once no where,
Here and there,
His heart encompasses all.
He is but a man, standing tall.

Son of a father
Father to a multitude
Shoulder's burdened
And soul embued with God's strength.
His fortitude a bolt from that self-same power granting life to all.

He was chosen by us
A covenant sealed with symbolic words baptized in real blood.
Words fail, a soul's truth finds other means to reach hearts hungry for freedom.

Who dast call into question the shining sword
Hammered thought it may have been from baser metal?
Time reveals destiny.
Destiny reveals the man.
History will remember what the weak refuse to see.

To George Walker Bush, we cast our lot with thee.
