I like movies and gossip(if interesting). Lately the movies are so cookie cutter and the actors so corporate...that there are fewer good movies or interesting gossip. Depp is probably an exception...

From Entertainment Weekly site, 2004 interview:
Q: Now that everybody--audiences, critics--likes you, do you like everybody?
Depp: I've always liked everybody. [Laughs.] I'm not sure everybody likes me. Everybody thinks that I don't live in the United States anymore, that I live in France, which is not true. I just happen to have a home in France, as well, because my kids are half French. And that interview where suddenly I'm anti-American? It was untrue. It blew over quick, but it was an ugly moment. You don't want people believing that stuff. If I had said it, I'd take full responsibility. But it wasn't what I meant.

Besides, based on the very dark trailers, do we really need a remake of the loveable classic featuring a much kinder Willy Wonka as played by Gene Wilder?
Did you actually watch the original? It was a really creepy movie.

"The American public are not going to the movies because they are tired of supporting spoiled brats who bad-mouth the very country that made them famous" That's basically why I don't go to movies, especially when I can enjoy the ones I do want to see at home in just a few months. While it's easy for me to not spend money on Tom Cruise, George Clooney and Woody Allen; Susan Sarandon and Johnny Depp would get my $$ via DVD rental. Of the little talent left in Hollyweird, these have the most, IMHO.

It's basically the movie Seven for kids, without Kevin Spacey, of course.

I didn't care for it as a child; I remember having to read it sometime around third grade Didn't like the book either, read it before the movie as my children wanted to see the movie. Thought, "No," and didn't take them. Saw it on TV last year for the first time; realized my original opinion was correct. IMO they lightened it up with some "fluff" and music to make the movie passable for kids, but there is a very dark side that I did not care for.
I Certainly would not like to see the book and character more correctly portrayed in the new version. I never cared for Depp anyway. Not that I think he will care if I don't care for him or don't see his movies.

Depp is a favorite in our family, too. We think he's one of the most versatile actors around.
Unlike Tommie "The Glib" Cruise... (Yep, had to get my slam in.)

Bride of Frankenstein was redone in 1985 as
"The Bride", starring Sting of all people. It was ok.
To: aruanan
Wilder was charmingly sinister and a tad maniacal.
[I happen to like that in a guy]....;)

I agree that the Gilbert Grape movie was great, and it was also where Leonardo Dicaprio got his start (and gave an outstanding performance as Arnie), but my all time favorite movies of Depp's are Don Juan DeMarco and Benny and Joon. Those were two of the most delightful movies I've ever watched. I don't get into the ordinary, mushy romantic movies, but these movies both appealed to my romantic side while providing the quirky mental twists that made them unique. I also liked Cry Baby. Yes, I know it was rather hokey, but it was a fun spoof of the movies of the late 50's.

I'm sorry this is just silly. And frankly, I'm getting sick of all this anti-American labeling. One of the things I love most about this country is that we have the ability to speak our minds about the government - applaud it, criticize it, what have you.
There are many times I'd agree with what Johnny said. And its my right to express that opinion. In fact I think its more of a duty as a citizen. It's not always anti-American. I'd say its one of the most American things you can do. Standing up, speaking out, telling our government what you think is right or wrong is a good thing.
If he'd criticized Clinton and called America dumb during Bosnia, most of the people on this site would be praising him and calling him a great American. But now that he's doing it about Bush's policies, its anti-American?

Seven could have done with some singing and Oompa Loompas...though I can't imagine what the songs would have sounded like.

"You will live in happiness too, Like the Oompa Loompas doompity do!" I don't want to be happy like anyone's doompity do.
To me it seemed that the Oompa Loompas were either in a totalitarian regime or in a communist state...always working and never enjoy life doing things like bungee jumping, binge drinking, or waking up in the arms of a 3 that after 5 beers looked like a 10.

I can imagine Nine Inch Nails covering the song.
