On this day in:
1990: The record/near record heat wave throughout W U.S. that began on 24th, was to end today with 108 Deg. F. in Pueblo, CO
1996: 95 Deg. F. temps and dew points in the mid 70's (THI ~ 85) led to 70 people given medical attention Millwaukee, WI's Summerfest celebration. If but for the water misters, there would've been more injuries.
1997: While probably not all-time boggas, it was most likely pretty clean, cookin' corduroy surf nontheless. 7' (occasional sets to 10') along HI's south-facing shores were a result of a strong low-pressure system SE of New Zealand.
One of the lesser known lightning safety tips, although vehicles in general are good shelter from lightning strikes, a propane truck probably isn't the vehicle of choice. On the same day as the above incident, in Albuquerque, NM the Viking Kitties of Thor zotted just such a vehicle. Three men where hurt (two critically) when the truck's tank ruptured, the tank's contents explosively venting into the atmosphere and a rather violent exothermic reaction subsequently occured. "Wow, that blowed up real good, eh, Hank?"
Indoors static discharges of 1" are known to require 40,000 volts of electropotenial difference. When one considers that most vertical strokes of lighting originate some 8 miles in the atmostphere (and have been documented travelling as far as 25 miles horizontally), well that really puts the ruler to what lighting is actually all about. Anyways, indoors static discharges are a sure sign of too dry indoors environment. By evaporating a couple of pints of water daily, indoor static electricity discharges can be eliminated.

Speaking of lightning, did you see the pix on this thread.
I always thought people were safe from lightning in their automobiles.

Still raining here.
Cool thread though, and yowza on the lightning strike.
Albuquerque ? - one of those big tanker trucks? - doesnt that stuff have like a 300% expansion rate when it hits the atmosphere ? - they should have landed in Toledo........as a fine red spray
Lucky they lived to talk about it
Smoke's getting bad. @1553 UTC (ADT +8):

Prevailing visibility 3 statue miles obscured by smoke. An obscuring layer at 1000' covering no more than 2/8 of the sky (a layer of altostratus covering at least 3/8 of sky at 13000 - this dropped 3 thousand feet over the following hour - and overcast with a cirrus layer at 20000).

prevailing visibiliy 2 1/2 mile obscured by smoke (THI 59.8 @ 61 Deg. F.)
Today the smoke is at ground level and the sky is visible although with reddish color. Don't know if there is a connection, but my neighbor is wearing her Grace Slick outfit and a van took her and left a dog.

Since visibility was greater than 6 statute miles, an entry for present weather wasn't required. Since smoke was being reported in all quadrants in the remarks, I could surmise that all the layeres reported could be smoke (<= 2/8 obscured @ 12,000 and overcast @ 20,000).
However, since visibility presently is below the 6 mile threshold, present weather must be reported, ergo the obscuration to visibility at the station is reported as smoke. HOWEVER, a distinction is made that the layer at 1000' is smoke in the remarks (<= 2/8 coverage though). Since sector visiblity is not reported, the informs me that prevailing visibility is impeded by smoke in all quadrants (don't need a special entry for that).
That the sky appears red even so higher layers are not reported as being smoke, is because you're observing them through the obscuration of smoke at the surface.

Smoke layer at 1000' has increased coverage to at least 3/8 sky coverage to less than 5/8.
The smoke is visible to eye and olfactory apparatus. Smells like 2-cycle engine and old socks combined. Temp is not so bad as yesterday. Yesterday was 79 at the door, well-shaded, today 78. Humidity is always 60-70, never changes even in rain. Wind gusting up to 4 knots. 21h 33m sunlight, down 3m 25 sec from yesterday. This passes for weather.
THI 70.4 @ 80.6 Deg. F. THAT'S SHWEEEEEEET. I don't see anything in there about socks smelling like 2-cycle Otto engines, but I notice you've lost the top two layers.
You really got me going on that Gracie Slick chick though. Of course the fundamental premise of all things is in their interconnectedness. What I want to know, not so much why they snatched Gracie Slick up, and dumped off a god, but what relationship is there to the dog and the fires. Clearly Gracie knows something, and they want to give her a good talking to, maybe go sleep with the fishes if you know what I mean. The dog obviously is no threat to anybody and won't talk. This smells professional. I'm wondering how high up the foodchain this goes.
They accuse this town of being all hookers and crooks. Hah! They are right about the professional part anyway.
a town full of hookers and crooks surrounded by fires of mysterious origin that smells like 2 stroke Otto engines running on dirty socks polluting what little atmostphere exists in the place, van's abducting Gracie Slick look-alike's and dumping dogs off in their place and a humidity that never changes even when its raining. Hmmmmm. The trail is obviously leading to Aruba.
Whoah, this sounds like it's going to be getting somewhat espensive (hence the term: expense report). So who do I make the invoice out to: you or the City of Fairbanks?
The City of Fairbanks is run by some sharp cookies. Good luck getting a dollar out of them. I, probably a typical FReeper, myself haven't bought anything since 1952. Wanna buy a pipeline? Will build to suit, Prudhoe Bay, Valdez, Cook Inlet, Chicago; oil, natural gas, LNG, what do you need?
