Just a simple question for my FReepin' frineds: What is the best way to intentionally shrink 100% cotton?
I was given two summer dresses for my birthday, both of which are about 1/2 size too large. They are 100% cotton with a pretty tight weave--almost denim to the touch. The directions say to wash cold, tumble dry warm. Help!

Buy doughnuts. Eat. Repeat as necessary.

Hot wash, high heat dry. If you don't want to fade them too much, don't use detergent, but do add brightener or color-safe "bleach."
Or you could send them to me for maternity use :-).

Yup - expected in early February, if all goes well.
FReepmail me about ideas for your shawl ... I'm feeling the urge to weave!

Hmmmmmmmm , thats a tough one. Sometimes 100% cotton will "warp" when it shrinks. One arm longer than the other, back longer than the front, etc. But if you want to take a chance put the dryer on the highest setting, and keep checking! DO USE HOT WATER! That will fade the color!

But will hot water increase the likelihood of some shrinkage? I'm not too concerned about the color fading; one dress is an ultra-dark navy, nearly black, the other is khaki. They are both sleeveless. They are actually girl's dresses, size XL, which is around a 16. I usually wear a girl's 14. They are romper-style dresses, really, just something I'll wear around the house.

But will hot water increase the likelihood of some shrinkage? Yes it will! If you are not concerned on some color fading it will help with the shrinkage!

Rather than trying to shrink it, couldn't you just alter it? Take in the baggy parts?
