The newly engaged Katie Holmes still has some explaining to do to her friends and family.
There were 16 days in April during which no one seems to know where she was.
Holmes made a public appearance on April 4 at the premiere of "Steel Magnolias" on Broadway.
She came with her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, and a couple of other friends. They were there to support Rebecca Gayheart, who was making her Broadway debut.
I know this because I spoke to Holmes at length during the play's intermission. She said she had just moved into her New York apartment and was looking forward to seeing the city.
I also know that on April 4, she had not yet made the acquaintance of Tom Cruise. She briefly dated Josh Hartnett after breaking up with actor Chris Klein.
Hartnett, Klein, Cruise: Which of these three is not like the others?
Klein and Hartnett are young and tall. Cruise is middle-aged and height-challenged.
On the other hand, he's the biggest movie star in the world. They are not.
Holmes was busy during that first week in April. On April 7, she was photographed at the Fragrance Foundation's FiFi event.
Four days later, Holmes was still in New York and was photographed at VH1's "Save the Music" concert. She still had not met Cruise.
Sometime that week, her friends say, she flew to Los Angeles for a meeting with Cruise about a role in "Mission: Impossible 3." The meeting took place after April 11.
The next time anyone heard from Holmes was on April 27, when she appeared in public as Cruise's girlfriend and love of his life.
Where was she during those 16 days?

Did Tom Cruise try to recruit Scarlett Johansson to Scientology?
The Lost in Translation star was expected to co-star with Cruise in Mission: Impossible III but was dropped because of scheduling conflicts. But it seems that there may have been other conflicts as well. Cruise invited Johansson to a Scientology center where he showed her literature about joining his controversial church, according to a report. After two hours of proselytizing, according to RadarMagazine.com, Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingénue politely excused herself.
The Scoop called Johanssons mother/manager for comment and she declined, referring us to Johanssons publicist, who didnt return calls or emails. Cruises rep didnt respond to requests for comment, but Rick Ross of CultNews.com told the Scoop: Is this Tom Cruises version of a first date? Its becoming increasingly difficult to make distinctions between his personal, professional and religious life. Tom Cruise and Scientology seem intent on recruiting a hot young star. Apparently, Scarlett Johansson flunked her test, but Katie Holmes passed.
Nah..she was binge drinking on kaballah water..
O'Reilly actually said that? People don't have a clue what Scientology is unless they've read the book or heard about it on the net. He backed off. That's unusual for Bill. Wonder what's up.
Can't find the Cathy Seipp piece--do you have a link or can you give more specific directions?
CREEPY!!!!!!!!
2)Greta Van Susteren is a Scientologist.
NRO.com..it's at the top of the page..
Not buying #1 but #2 makes sense.
Good Gracious! You're right. Obviously, the Scientologists and the Mormons are in on this together. Watch for Tom Cruise to appear in an Osmond hairdo.
I think the little ancient aliens inside him told him to
Matthew McConaughey (wacky but rugged)....Sean Connery (older but still "manly")....Tom Selleck (conservative & "manly"). FeliciaCat, I never did "get" the Tom Cruise popularity factor either....seems totally manufactured and contrived....similar to Rock Hudson...Tab Hunter..et.al. Thanks for an "entertaining" thread...even though I think that Scientology is a serious money laundering cult that should be placed under the microscope....similar to the scrutiny given to the Mafia back in the 70's and 80's.
How long does a sex change operation take?
LOL!
Hey, Fierce,
If you pay me 5 millin dollars - I'll promise not to have sex with you for 5 years. Maybe even six...
;^)
There are probably lots of powerful people who are Sci's...maybe that why they can continue to operate.
That is my general thought, as well...they are probably layered from the bottom to the top of the entertainment industry. And there are probably those who are involved; that get the most lucrative deals and contracts based on their Scientology.
