Graphic by Billie
The water is cool and as still as glass
I see myself as ripples swirl out and away
With each delicious little sip
Hunger is still there, yet thirst is worse
Stomach pangs can be forced away
Thirst is forever and that's a curse
With water there's food to scent and track
While I think of that future day's attack
The ripples are disturbed now... "Who are you?"
"I am a Mule Deer just like you.
I was lost in a storm without a clue
Until I smelled this water on the ridge.
I thought I'd take a chance. Do you mind?"
"Of course not, there's enough for all.
It flows a long way under a bridge.
And to the east there is a gorgeous tree line
Full of shoots and berries for us to find!"
"Us?" my new friend asked
"Sure," I said. "We'll halve the task
Of finding more than enough food
For us and others.
"It is summer now and this stream will soon be abuzz
Don't ask me why. It's just because.
With countless Raccoons, Opossum, Cardinals, Geese Moccasins, Beaver and Does.
"Animals that swim, fly and slither, most though walk.
We all need a place to get together.
To talk, no matter what the weather.
To begin our stalk and this season so quickly goes!"
