The details of it are sketchy in my mind, but I read somewhere that L. Ron Hubbard created Scientology as part of a bet with another writer. The bet was which of the two of them, both disenchanted with Christianity, could think up a "religion" that people would actually follow. L. Ron apparently won the bet.

This puts scientology on par with Marxism on the political scale. Karl Marx decided that after he blew through his own money, including 2 inheritances, that every body should share what they have with everyone else. WOW!! Utopia!

As far as made-up religions go, you are forgetting Kwanzaaaaaa. Well, it an't quite a religion, but a made-up holiday for blacks who didn't have anything beyond fried humans and worshipping devils to fall back on...
