I'm going shopping this afternoon. My friend wants wedding dress advice. Apparently she thinks I know something about fashion, or what looks good, or something. She is very foolish.

Wedding dress. Not prom dress.

I don't think that qualifies as a prom dress either.

If it's even a dress.

Trying to read ecurb's expression in that second pic...he didn't find your mourning amusing, did he?

*Sniff*

Just dropped TheCat off at the vet's....I feel like such a traitor.

Trying to get everything organized for TheTrip. Think I'll take a break to put out some fertilizer and do some weeding.

In the meantime I'm recording the Apollo 11 mission off the web...

I'm reading those emails right now. Every one of those fine troops will get the Hobbit Hole knife they have earned.

I've also come to the conclusion that we must end the sheath-knife portion of our Hobbit Hole program. Despite the many contributions that have come in, we give out $50 and $100 dollars worth of knive for each dollar coming in. It's unsustainable.

I will continue to send knives to these two National Guard units to the best of my financial ability. But further gifts of sheath knives will be restricted to troops personally known by us folk in the Hobbit Hole.

The donation of Camillus folding knives will continue as before. They will go out to anyone who asks for them. That was our original purpose in setting up the program.

I was going to write an email to Gerber, mentioning to them how well received their five knives were. I'll still to that, since they have earned the praise these knives brought.

We'll still be buying Camillus sheath knives as the need arises, because Camillus has been extremely generous and supportive, and we can buy in any quantity needed.

This last week has brought me lots of pleasure as I read the emails coming in, a lot of them directly to me, rather than through the web site. It's only due to the sheer volume, and lack of time, that I haven't shared them here.

But Christmas must end, even for Santa Claus. The fixed-blade portion of our knife project has to end before we start making other troops unhappy. We will continue to donate knives to these two National Guard units, one in Iraq, the other still stateside. And these knives will still go to troops personally known by Hobbit Hole members.

And the pocket knife program will go on as always.

Thank you for your support in all of this. The task is just too great for even the Hobbit Hole to undertake any longer.

Rick

Understood, Rick.... I'd still like to see the donations come in to cover the sheath knives already purchased. There is definately demand, but unless we can get some donations in the thousands somehow, or a source of donated knives, I am glad to see you rein it in so you don't get any more stuck.

This is a wedding dress, and when she's done she makes a nice bedspread.

This is why I'm being brought along... to discourage any idiocy... I may not know a good dress, but sure as heck I can spot a bad one.

Understood. Even just seeing the increase in response through the website in recent weeks got me to thinking about whether this was getting out of hand. I would agree that it is a good idea for us to focus on what can be reasonably maintained with our limited resources.

If I end up winning a million dollars on Jeopardy, though...

Your best service might be to prevent her from spending twice as much on the dress as she really has to spend. They really can be a lot.

Also have her be prepared that the wedding dress industry wants women to feel fat. Her wedding dress size will be a full two sizes bigger than she normally wears. Sonya's thin, and she was having to try on 14s and 16s. It's "European sizing". The psychology is all wrong. If you want me to buy an expensive dress, show me a size 5 I can fit into.
