The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Good movie... saw it on cable last weekend.

Lotta witty dialog. And of course the whole Bogey and Bacall chemistry, for what that's worth...
I liked it!
They don't make detective movies like that anymore. I guess it wouldn't be believable to do them in the same *style*...but there are still investigations, aren't there? It just seems to be a lost genre.

"L.A. Confidential" was a pretty good mystery/detective movie. Also, it's the movie that introduced Russell Crowe to U.S. audiences.

Maybe we can check that out...
Any icky parts I should know about?
At least there are still plenty of mystery BOOKS. Got me a new stack of them today! I think my next library run will have to include some things in the Raymond Chandler / Dashiell Hammett vein, though.

*Sniff* Don't you just love it when the help goes postal and burns down your family estate?
Saw The Big Sleep a couple of weekends ago.

*Sniff* Don't you just love it when the help goes postal and burns down your family estate?Does that happen in Rebecca? Been a bit since I read or watched that.

Well, it got an "R" rating for language, sexual situations, and some violence. No particular icky parts I can recall, although it does wallow a bit in the seamy side of Hollywood circa late-1950's. The plot follows three cops (the young up-and-comer, the dumb muscle, and the world-weary vice cop) who eventually figure out that the cases they're working seperately are really all tied together.
To: RosieCotton
Yes. And something similar happened in Jane Eyre.
To: Overtaxed
Yep...I wuz gonna mention that.
Guess they didn't have volunteer fire departments worth their salt in rural England back in those days. Tut, tut.

Is Russell Crowe the dumb muscle?
Heh...I'm guessing he's the "up-and-comer", but...
