*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I was pretty leary of letting him on trails on Dot at first. The funny thing about him and that crop is he rides along swinging around her head, wacking tall weeds. Dot tends to get real slow, just like her daddy. The crop helps speed her up.

Last year when they all went on vacation Jenny said Blake was hanging off the side of is saddle wacking weeds. She looked back at them, Dot had a mouthful of grass, and Blake said, "she's the mower, and I'm the weed wacker:)".

It's kind of funny to see the expression in her eyes, when he's doing that sort of thing.

I have yet to see a horse that didn't take special care of kids...

Wait... I take that back... my pony ;~D

Does she walk slow with Mom on board also? Or is she just taking care of him?

Like I would have noticed a dangling participle? I suck at grammar.

I'm between Dallas and Fort Worth, up near Denton.

I've heard that but so far, I've been lucky. Never had a problem. Dormosedan is the best (imo) but man, is that stuff expensive! Ace is dirt cheap.

Blake does real well on her, and I don't mean to take away from his abilities, but I wouldn't trust a kid his age on just any horse. We don't let him do playday events on her. She's too young and not solid enough on them. She could either get confused and then get stupid, or it could mess her up in the learning process. His other grandparents have an older horse that he does that sort of thing on. He's not a real aggressive rider like some kids are, but he does pretty good. I think if he took a bad fall at this point, it might set him back some. He's been riding now for about 2 years.

We use to have scorpions around here bad. They have thinned out now. But when we first moved here we'd frequently find them in the house. I never got up at night without pulling my boots on first:). That was a sight:)

No she is like Rock, she is slow all the time, no matter whose on her. Jenny is working on speeding her up. She did pretty good Mon.

Well, it looks like he's doing just great.

I think our Cyn would do real well with a child up... Better than Bay even... Bay is very careful when there's a child on, but he doesn't listen to them. I have to lead him and he won't let them turn away from me. He just turns and comes right back. Cyn, you just point and she goes. She's not as spooky as Bay is, she's steady as a rock. But she'd be hard for a child to handle from the ground. I guess any of them are... they're just so big. Under most circumstances... I fear for kids under hoof more than I do once they're up.

It stands for Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. It's a disease carried by possums and passed on to horses through contact with possum droppings and causes severe neurological damage and usually death.

Wow! What nice pictures. He sure is a lucky little boy to have a Grandma that'll do stuff like that with him, and you're lucky to have a Grandson who has an interest in your favorite hobby. :o)

Looks like Oklahoma isn't on the list of states that don't allow shipment of rabies vaccines to non-veterinarians. Florida too.

EEEWWWWWWWWWW....that is not what we saw today. The snake we saw today, and some markings on it, almost like a rattle snake, but it wasn't a rattle snake.

Are there other types of water snakes? any with markings.

You just about got us killed:). After the first picture you posted, we left to go throw rocks in the creek. We saw another snake like the one we saw earlier, but I didn't think it was a moccasin, so we threw rocks at it:) It just went under water and stayed there. We could see it laying on the bottom.
