This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Our latest dog, and Sparky the blue heeler before her never bit the horses heels. Or the children. When herding cows and other dogs, well that is another matter!
Try training. Now is the time to start your beautiful puppy, Mommadooo3. I have started our English setter on comand by whistles too and she has responded very well, she does have Sally to watch though. My first whistles were to train them to come immedietly I called. There is another for food, and a different one if I have someone here and need them for protection. When a cow got lose into our yard, Sally did great in blocking of an escape route! Going riding in the forest again.... by ourselves this time. It's gonna be hot here today, for a change.

I'm back from riding Harley. It's getting hot here too. I've got to go do some truck swaping with Kristy so I can get Belle to the vet this afternoon. When I get back from there, I'm riding Rusty.
Harley did great. We did the horsemanship exercises today that we were taught, and he did them very well. We were done with them in 45 minutes, so we went on a short trail ride. It was nice being out there so early in the morning.

Yes - train the dog to herd on command (which is what our heelers are trained for). We use the command - Go to it/them. We use the command - OFF to call them back. They herd goats, horses occassionally and I did set them on a wild stud once. They have to be reminded occassionally not to herd chickens :)
It's going to be a wonderful picture. I'd square up the legs - horse and rider deserve that and the camera probably would have caught them squared up in another second or two.

Good morning - you have a busy day planned. Could be Rusty is just goofing off.
Just catching up here. Glad you had a good ride, and seeing the bear was cool, but that comment reminded me of an old joke. Something about not having to be faster than the bear, just faster than the guy next to ya. ;o)
I figure that's the way the horses would look at the situation.... Heck... I just have to leave this rider here, and I'm home free ;~D
Yes, that is what I think he is doing. He just needs to get back into the routine. I just got off him, and am in having lunch. He seeemed a little better today. I got him to bend for his turns, and he was picking up his feet better over the cavalettis. Still was going very slow, but I decided not push him to speed his walk up till the farrier comes. Maybe his toes are long. I'm a little late on him getting trimmed. He'll be here in the morning. But he did seem to stay more focused today. So maybe we are making progress.

So far, George isn't interested in the chickens. 'Course, Killer let him KNOW the 'deal'. LOL!!!
But George SURE IS fascinated by the cats/kittens.Maybe it's because they spit at him.
