*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

What would be faster a bear or a horse? Aren't black bear relatively unagressive? Would they start something?

Even though we show at halter, my favorites are always the ones that highlight ability and time. :)

What's up with her after the shot? Does it make her sweat like that? She looks like she's had a wild romp already. ;~D

I hate the reaction and try very hard not to be around for it, when it's necessary.

Yeah, it's like clock work. 30 minutes after you give it they get the sweats really bad, and really look bad. 30 minutes after this she was dried out and back to normal.

Boy, I dunno. Bear are very fast when they want to be, but not for long distances. I think where we'd get caught, would be that our escape would be back down the trail you can see behind Lisa in the pic of her in the clear cut. It's a switchback trail, and not only would it be a dangerous ride fast, she'd not necessarily take the switchbacks, she could crash straight down hill.

Black bears usually aren't aggressive, they're primarily vegetarian, mostly eating berries, exception being that they'll eat carrion carcasses and garbage. They are aggressive when they have cubs, and she did.

My dad said they don't see very well, that when she stood up to see us, she probably saw movement but not exactly what we were and she would be curious. Not sure if she'd even know what we were on horseback, though she's undoubtedly seen lots of us before without event.

It makes me feel bad to do that to her. When I went out to take her picture, she kept following me around wanting to be patted. I rubbed her head and whithers till she felt like she was cooling down. She really is a good mare. Really likes to be handled, just doesn't like to be rode:(.

I knew bears were fast. I'd guess your right about it being hard on a trial like that to move out.

Interesting about them not seeing well. Nice to know what your advantages are:)

I think I'd skip that part of the forest for awhile - Momma bears aren'the nicest creatures in the woods.

If it was really coming after us, I'm not sure how well the horses would keep their wits... heh... I can see the horses leaving us sitting in the trail. Bay says "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun ~you~"

I really was not that worried about this one. She was 200 yards off, and they won't normally start trouble. It was only slightly unnerving that she appeared to be continuing toward us, when most of the time, they'll run off, long before you ever see them. She stood up and looked at us.

That is really cool, I'd imagine not too many people get to see wildlife like that in the wild.

Did your friend have any trouble keeping up with you, or you her? How far did you go? I can't imagine riding a bike on trials like that. Does she do it alot?

I bet we never see her again.... ;~D

What'd you think of that little blanketed colt? Pretty cool getting the little thing out on trails that young. Wonder how far they went.

On the flat, she's faster than us... it's a mountain bike so it handles bumps and even the mud OK.

This was her first time out, she got tired fast going up hills, and she'd stop and walk it, and take breaks. There's a lot more climbing that's gradual on the trails than I realize when I'm on horse ;~D

Well ladies, I'm off to bed. I need to get an early start in the morning to beat the heat.

Good night:)

Oh - we found out that tomorrow there will be at least a hundred riders up on the forest trails doing and endurance ride, so we' gonna go to a place Tiff knows about. She said it's a good place, she used all the words she knows how to use when trying to get me to trust her ;~D

I haven't been here very often lately because I'm so busy right now, but I really miss everyone. My sister, her daughter, SIL and two grandchildren are moving from California to Nevada. Well, they already sold their house and are staying with me until they get a house put on the property they just bought.

On top of that, closing the fiscal year at work. However, was watching the babies from the house this evening and took these pictures for you all. Zoomed as close as I could get but they are still hard to see.

Good morning.

Hair, why wouldn't you trust Tiff?

Duchess, sounds like your hands are full, and your company will be there awhile. I like your runs.

Good Morning! Cloudy and overcast here today. Bah. We had a heat wave last week, and now it won't get above 60. However, 60s make it easier to sleep.
