"I used to have "emergency needs" children who through no fault of their own needed safe housing"

You are such a good person.

I'm just like everyone else, I can't bear the thought of children being hurt or abused, so when asked, I went through the training involved to be a "safe house" for them. I think I was the one that gained the most from it. To be able to see those children go from what they had endured to running and laughing and playing as normal...........I couldnt ask for anything more. : )

Our last 'official' farrier retired about 2 years ago. And he was the only one for a 5 county area.

I'm going to insist that hubby go to farrier school on his next lay-off. It's @ $4,000 but well worth it. Our old guy made 2,000 on the day he came to OUR place, and others'. Of course, he only charged US, 75-80 for 4-5 horses.

I think Mark would do well at it. He's got the arm and back strength needed.(a little short in patience, but he'd realize he had MORE if he went to school)

Man.....another year without a garden for me. I hate it. I don't know what to do with myself without a garden to water/weed/tend.(sniff)

A hoof stand DOES make it easier on ya. 'Course, I wouldn't know 'bout that. I just hold the horses while hubby does the work. But he WAS grouching about wishing he still had ours.

He's got the whole farrier set. The rasp is what gets used the most.

I've seen on websites, where people use those stool thingy's on wheels to sit on trimming hooves.

There seems to be a shortage everywhwere, I have suggested farrier to school to deaconjim too, he's very strong.
It would go hand in hand with raising cattle and homeschooling! Who knows........! : )

I've never seen one of those, I don't think. Point me at one of those websites so I can check 'em out.

The hoof stand I'm thinking about getting looks like this. The one on the right is for minis. They make one for Drafts too, but it's not pictured. You get the stand with a cradle and a post attachment. The round things on the sides are 90# pull magnets to hold your tools while you're working. It's called a Hoof Jack...

I'll have to look up the websites.

Tha hoof jack sure is a fancy gadget! I LIKE that idea of magnets.

ours was just a homemade job. Friend of ours welded one up for us. He used a pulley from a car engine as the 'hoof resting spot'. Horses seemed to like the idea of a 'secure'place to 'rest' their foot. LOL.

Gotta run for a while. Laundry needs caught up on, while it's so cool outside.

Yeah, it's pretty expensive too, but it looks really sturdy and would eliminate you having to pull the hoof up between your knees. That posture can really get you in a bind in a hurry, especially if the horse is leaning on you. With this thing, you can rest their hoof in the cradle and put your knee on their pastern to stabilize the foot while you trim or rasp. But I don't know if I'm committed enough to doing it myself to get my money's worth out of it. The Jury's still out I guess.

Sure, post pictures and tell us what you learned. You were taught by one of the best, and I know I would like to hear about it. It will help you remember what you learned also. Sometimes it's hard to absorb all that is taught, but will come back when you speak of it.

Yes, my daughter has been running barrels lately. A friend has a couple of nice Quarter horses, that are well trained for barrels and poles. She has been riding them at shows and does pretty well. We would appreciate any knowledge you have to share. I showed her all your pictures and she read what you wrote.

Now, how often will you do the massaging?

The reason why you taste the garlic stuff is because the DMSO helps/allows the nitrofurizone to penetrate the skin and into the wound. Not sure what the taste is from, but it's either the DMSO or the furizone. (I've never tasted either, so I couldn't tell you). Sorry, my chemistry nerd antennae just went up! :-)

This lady says she does it everyday before she saddles. Right now she is running a barrel horse and works her horse everyday.

I'm working on getting in the habit of doing it every time I ride. We shall see:)
