This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
"They like the comic value of watching you step on a cold hairball, or worse yet......a warm one!!! :~<"
Oh gross.
Where do you come up with these pics?
Google is a very powerful tool ;~D
My husband and large animals just do not mix. I think his problem is that he's too brave around them. There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity and he crossed the line that day.
Fight the good fight!
Nice to meet you!
The day you had to take Bluebonnet and your husband to the doctor was a pretty impressive testament to your ability to handle a disaster!!
Later!!;>
I was pretty frazzled that day, I'll tell ya.
Have a good day cleaning webworms. Hollar later!
"That is correct. At least, they used to do that. A ruling was made to stop the practice. Also, bleeding and starving to make them go so slow. Terrible what people will do, for a ribbon"
She was also telling us that they will keep the horses head high all day long untill the show, so the horse will keep his head low during the show.
That is just stinkin' sick.
Ultrasounds will take care of that. That's what I always do since I don't have a stallion handy. I just take the mare to the vets and let him ultrasound her and he can tell you how many days it'll be before she comes into heat the next time by looking at the size of her ovaries. They can get pretty darned close too, if not right on the money. It sure saves a lot of time and effort.
Oh gosh, never heard of that one. I have seen them with draw reins so tight, to keep the head low. That was when they were practicing. Not while showing.
You going to have a live thread tomorrow, on the Belmont Stakes?
Oh - yeah - I probably will! I forgot it was tomorrow.
Yea, that's what she said. Adriana said that when she was competing in them she would see the riders fasten the leadropes up high so the horse had to keep his head up, and they would be like that up until show time, then when the riders undid the ropes, the horse would automatically put their head down because they were so sore and tired.
Yikes! I forgot too!
The breeder will just keep her near the stud and tease her too, till she comes into heat. You don't have to wait till she's IN heat to take her.
Isn't she in her teens? It's also ~possible~ she won't go into heat. Mares in their teens who have never been bred do become barren.
Well it's not as exciting when there's no triple crown.
Each breed has people who have figured out how to abuse the horse in search of whatever is an edge in their breed.... In Arab circles, they put vinegar or ginger or something in their butt to get them to carry the tail HIGHER.
The thing I don't get about QH showing is that I don't think the ideal they're aiming for is attractive. I like a horse that looks like it's going somewhere, not dragging to it's death.

I agree. I think a lot of is is "one-upping" on each other. "If that person's Arab has its tail that high than we can go higher.." or "If that person's QH has his neck that low we can go lower.." That sort of thing. It is really stupid and childish as far as I am concerned.
They should have a limit in the rules as to how much is too much. I mean, I am sure that they don't want the horses chin dragging in the dirt, but there should be a limit. They just exaggerate things too much.
Well, supposedly, QH's are now to be graded down for necks below the horizontal, but I sure didn't see it at the show I was at, even the hunters had their noses in the dirt, and won classes that way.
