Sticking my nose into this one. Your comments are interesting regarding the time period of the books vs. the values of the times when they were written.
Perhaps your perceptions are based on having been closer in life to the time period of the book(having lived or seen others live those values first hand) than is Paved Paradise?
Paved, you mentioned the 60’s-70’s. mlmr, do you go back farther than that?
I found the books in retrospect to have the moral grounding of the time they were written not the forties. Divorce was a big deal in the forties, especially within the military. Sexual connections were certainly common in wartime but those who didn’t get back on the porch were shunned.
