That may be true so long as the path isn't blocked. That kinda messes up the skipping rock picture.

I've heard the purpose of the leathers is twofold:

--In a mild accident, it prevents skin scrapes.

--In a serious accident, it keeps the bones in one place, where doctors can find them.

You could say leathers also make the cleanup easier for the ambulance crew.
