Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]
[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn
This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003
The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden
The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master
]
Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Comment Section:
Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
You don't think her bumper is sticky enough already?
ROTFLMBO. Now THAT is funny.
i said i realize jerry kilgore, VA candidate for gov, cannot be held responsible for what happened in the Senate, but it does account for the horrible taste in my mouth and ain't no cash going to flow anywhere til that passes.
That is awful-why is it such a mess in those places-don't people get fined for polluting like they do here (ruinous fines)?
i am serious. he was waxing POETIC, LITERALLY about sheets celebrating 68 yrs of marriage and how nice Sheets was when Ted's first wife died yada yada, it was so damn bizarre
Gawd, that sounds like a gagfest alright.
i had a bad day at work today and xshub feels bad for me... he is actually going to stop and pick up the chinese food for us for dinner. i don't know if he has ever done that (you know he doesn't eat chinese, being aberrant as he is). he said, wait a minute, if i pick it up, i guess that means i have to PAY FOR IT, also... i said unless they let me charge it OVER THE PHONE!
LMAO! How sweet of him-he doesn't eat Chinese? Is he going to pick up something different for himself?
cue twilight zone music.
Who is going to fine them?
Er, "cookie-nosed" please.
Ain't got no crooked noses round here.
no, i have plenty of bag salad.... it is sweet of him, he is sympathetic about my bad day. i rarely have one so it is bad when i do.
You have a point there-but it is still a shame to have a river that is so polluted that you din't want to use it for recreation or eat any fish from it.
(Robt checks her bumper. Carefully. Very, very carefully. Checks again.)
Nope. Not sticky. (Yet.) No polka dots either, but a few hints of wigglin' waltz whorls showin' up. Ticklish tango twists also..
Definitely round, smooth, firm, bouncy, and bouyant.
The sun has finally just shown for the first time all day.................actually for the first time since Monday afternoon.
Eating fish is another matter altogether...
When I was a kid, you couldn't even swim in it. My mother used to talk about swinning in the river in the early fifties, and we would all look at her like she was NUTS.
I'm sure you weren't the first - nor will you be the last.
You feeling any better?
got nice when i was coming home from getting the kids, it is in the 80s, which is unbelievable.
Yes, I am. Thank you.
I'll be feeling a whole lot better when (and if) this weather ever breaks for good, though.................
