Three cats we had, two parents and their daughter. When the daughter lost her last parent, her dad, she went into a month long depression which was only relieved by a fresh new kitten (to be sure, I got one the same color from the ASPCA). With her new found friend, she lived happily to the ripe old age of 22.

The new vet today (makes house calls!) is into some non-traditional treatments. Just gave Ernie a dose of Dr. Bach's Rescue Remedy--found in the natural food store--and bought some fresh catnip. He's perking up nicely this afternoon. High as a kite, but better than the depths of depression.
I thought the new vet was a bit on the dorky side, but the cats loved him.
