For future reference ... most if not all browsers have a configuration option to suppress image display. If you have a slow connection or don't have much memory capacity, consider temporarily choosing the "no pix" option if your session is choking on a large image file. That way you can keep on FReeping while the mods perform the cleanup on aisle 7. This option is also helpful on a live thread like a hurricane thread where people routinely post large graphics.

So it's okay for people to check their pings again?You can try, but even if the post was pulled from the thread it may still be on your comments page.
In that case, the only way to get rid of it is to get enough posts to push the picture onto another page. I'd suggest pinging yourself about 20 times, that should do it.
