Mother Who Killed Little Girl Jailed After Flunking Drug Test
POSTED: 8:00 am PDT May 20, 2005
EVERETT, Wash. -- A woman awaiting sentencing for the death of her 4-year-old stepdaughter has been jailed after flunking a drug test, an outcome her lawyer blamed on crack cocaine smoked by friends of her father.
After deputy prosecutor Craig Matheson said Thursday in Snohomish County Superior Court that traces of cocaine had been found in the blood of Heather B. Ewell, 25, of Lake Stevens, Judge George N. Bowden issued the order and set bail at $300,000.
"I'm not willing to tolerate a positive test for cocaine," Bowden said.
The judge said he might consider letting Ewell meet with a psychologist outside the jail but would allow her to visit with her four children, ages 1 to 8, only if that is requested by state officials who are now caring for the youngsters.
Ewell, who faces 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 years in prison when she is sentenced June 23, had been free with supervision after pleading guilty in March to manslaughter in the death of little Sirita Sotelo. An autopsy showed the girl, fathered by her husband, John C. Ewell, during an extramarital affair, died Jan. 21 of a skull fracture and liver injuries.

Note that she is not in jail for being found guilty of killing her step daughter, she is in jail for failing a drug test.
Liar. That flimsy excuse had been disproven time and again.
She killed a child and is only facing 6-8 years in prison for it yet the only reason she is in jail for drugs in her system??? Incomprehensible!
It sounds to me like she's in jail because her bail was revoked. It is common to make weekly drug tests a condition of bail. Of course all she has to do is come up with the 300K and she gets out for whatever time remains before her sentencing hearing for killing the girl.
She needs a free tubal ligation at taxpayer's expense. Looks like she started on the babies when she was 16, and she hasn't stopped since.
